Wave Beanie Crochet Tutorial
This beanie pattern has a 2 row repeat to create the waves so you will quickly get the hang of it. It uses the crochet wave stitch. Here are all the supplies and instructions you need to get crocheting:
Supplies
- Worsted weight yarn (10ply) #4. Approximately 160 m (175y)
- 5mm (H-8) and 5.5mm (I-9) crochet hooks
- Optional – faux fur pom-pom
I used Caron Cakes in color Faerie Cake and separated the colors for greater control.
Abbreviations

- sc =single crochet
- scblo = single crochet back loop only
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet stitch
- dc2tog = double crochet 2 together
- tr = treble stitch
- ch = chain stitch
- YO = yarn over

- 13 st and 14 rows of sc with a 5mm (H-8) hook.

- Fits the average female head.
Notes
- Ch 1 does not count as a stitch. Sc into the base of the chain.
Special Stitches
Single Crochet Back Loop Only
- Insert hook in the back loop. (Look at the top of the stitch. You'll see it has a V-shape composed of two loops - the front loop and the back loop.)
- YO, pull through (2 loops on hook).
- YO, pull the yarn through both loops. (1 loop on hook)

- YO, insert hook into the first stitch, YO and pull through (3 loops). YO and pull through 2 loops (2 loops).
- YO, insert hook into the next stitch, YO, pull through. (4 loops). YO and pull through 2 loops (3 loops), YO and pull through 3 loops (1 loop).

Wave Beanie, Step by Step Instructions
Brim (Color A)
- With color A, chain 9 (8+1) with the 5mm hook.
- Work 1 sc into 2nd chain, sc across the row, turn.
- Ch 1, sc into base of chain.
- Scblo until the last stitch, sc into last stitch.
- Repeat for 68 more rows. (Total rows is 70 or 35 ribs)
- Slip stitch or whip stitch the edges together and turn right way out.
- Change to 5.5 mm hook.
- Ch1, sc into the side of each row (70 stitches).
Row 1 Wave (Color B)
- Change to color B, ch 1 (doesn’t count as stitch).
- *1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 2 tr, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc. (First sc is into the base of the ch)
- Repeat from * until the last stitch. Slip stitch to join.
Row 2 ( Color C)
- Change to color C.
- Ch 3 (counts as first tr), 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1sc.
- *1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 2 tr, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc.
- Repeat from * until last 5 stitches.
- 1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 1 tr. Slip stitch to join.
Rows 3 to 10
Repeat rows 1 and 2 changing color every row.
- ROW 3 – Color D, Same as row 1
- ROW 4 – Color A, Same as row 2
- ROW 5 – Color B, Same as row 1
- ROW 6 – Color C, Same as row 2
- ROW 7 – Color D, Same as row 1
- ROW 8 – Color A, Same as row 2
- ROW 9 – Color B, Same as row 1
- ROW 10 – Color C, Same row 2
Row 11 (Color D)
- Change to color D, ch 3 (counts as first dc)
- Dc2tog every stitch to last stitch, dc.
- Fasten off leaving a long tail.
Finishing
- Thread a yarn needle and do a small up and down stitch (running stitch) all the way around the edge.
- Pull tight to gather.
- Stitch across the top a couple of times to further secure.
- Bring the yarn to the inside of the beanie and fasten off. Do not cut yarn if you want to add a pom-pom.

- Weave in all ends.
