Meatball Subs
These meatball subs use premade meatballs (you can totally make your favorite meatballs like these BBQ Smoked Meatballs – my fav!), pasta sauce and sliced cheese to create a delicious meatball sub that the entire family will enjoy. They are a quick and easy meal for a weeknight dinner on the grill.
Don’t you love those “stupid easy” meals that you almost always have the ingredients for? I know I do with a family of five and three of them being young children!
Plus, these are so easy to adapt to each family member’s taste buds. Add some more toppings on the meatball subs for the adults like Peperoncini rings, grilled onions and peppers (YUM!), sliced red onions or whatever your heart desires!
Who doesn’t love a great sandwich? We eat sandwiches often. They are easy meals and also easy to personalize to taste. Perfect for a family!
And whether they are made on the grill, tossed in a campfire or tucked into your oven you’ll have dinner on the table in minutes with minimal effort. Love those recipes that adapt to life situations with me.
Gotta love that!
What toppings do you put on a meatball sub?
This is a great Italian sub, so we are keeping it simple with just marina sauce and provolone cheese. Provolone is a great melting cheese so it’s perfect for this sub sandwich!
Additional Toppings
- Peperoncini rings
- Grilled onions
- Grilled peppers
- Thinly sliced red onions
- Lettuce
- Parsley
These toppings are totally optional, but if you’re looking to dress them up a bit, these flavors go nicely with these Italian meatball subs!
Grilled Meatball Subs
We really enjoyed these on our last camping trip. Because they are easy to make ahead and just place on the hot coals they really are tasty and easy to make! (Here’s another easy meatball meal perfect on the campfire Tater Tot Meatball Foil Packets!)

You’re looking for hearty long bread buns that you can split in half without slicing thru and that hold up to the sauce on them without getting soggy, no one wants a soggy bun, right?
Steps to make Grilled Sub Sandwiches
- In a mixing bowl combine the meatballs and marinara sauce.
- Split the bun in half lengthwise and filled each bun with the meatball/sauce mixture.
- Top with a slice of provolone cheese.

- Place on a preheated grill over indirect heat or a campfire for 20-30 minutes or until heated through and cheese is melted.
Dance come parsley over the top (if desired!) and dinner is done! How simple and delicious is that?!!

Mary Jane says
Do you need to cook the frozen meatballs separately before adding them to the sub or do add them frozen with the sauce?
Reply
Julie Evink says
Thaw them, but no need to cook since they are already fully cooked and just need to be warmed!

The cheese on these subs is SO SO good. Better than a grilled cheese sandwich lol! And we used our traeger and the smoky flavor really came through DELICIOUSLY on this meatball subs recipe. … just for anyone else who uses a traeger. It was wonderful.Reply

can you make these at home ahead of time then freeze then pack up in a cooler for a day or two then tosses on campfire or would it be best to assemble at the camp ground?
Reply
Julie Evink says
Hey Jill! I’m afraid they might get a bit soggy when they defrost if you do it ahead of time!
