Displaced workers are those who have lost or left their jobs due to reasons beyond their control, such as a plant closing or moving, relocation, downsizing or their position or shift being abolished.
Workers become displaced for a variety of reasons, many having to do with changes in production and the economy. For example, as Western countries have made a shift away from factory work, those who relied on factories for their daily income found themselves unable to find work in their skillset. At present, the Department of Labor has programs in place to retrain displaced workers for different lines of work that are in current demand. Related terms:
