Het woord zegt het al: met een swap wissel je iets om. Swaps zijn derivaten waarmee je kasstromen kunt omwisselen. Je wisselt bijvoorbeeld een variabele rente om tegen een vaste, maar hogere rente. In dit artikel bespreken we in meer details wat swaps zijn.
Wat is een swap?
Een swap is een derivaat waarmee je een kasstroom kunt omwisselen. Dit klinkt ingewikkeld: toch krijgt bijna iedereen wel eens te maken met een swap.
Wanneer je een hypotheek afsluit bij de bank is er bijvoorbeeld sprake van eenswap. Je bepaalt dan voor welke periode je de rente wilt vastzetten. Kies je bijvoorbeeld voor 10 jaar? Dan ruil je de garantie op een vaste rente in tegen de variabele rente die anders zou gelden.
Waarom gebruiken bedrijven swaps?
Swaps zijn populair, omdat ze het mogelijk maken om risico’s af te dekken. Een bedrijf kan bijvoorbeeld erg afhankelijk zijn van een bepaalde grondstof binnen een productieproces. Wanneer de prijs teveel zou stijgen, zou het bedrijf in de problemen raken.
Het bedrijf kan er voor kiezen om de prijs van de grondstof vast te zetten. Het bedrijf betaalt dan gegarandeerd niet meer dan een vast bedrag. Hierdoor is het bedrijf beschermd tegen eventuele stijgingen van de grondstof.

Interest rate swap
Bij een interest swap rate wissel je een variabele rente om voor een vaste rente. Dit doe je bijvoorbeeld wanneer je een hypotheek afsluit. Ook bedrijven doen dit wanneer ze een obligatie uitgeven tegen een vaste rente.
Je profiteert van een interest swap, wanneer je de rente vastzet en deze vervolgens stijgt. Met een interest rate swap kan je jezelf beschermen tegen wisselende rentetarieven.
Grondstoffen swap
Eerder in het artikel heb ik deze swap al behandeld. Met een grondstof swap kan je een prijs vastzetten voor het kopen of verkopen van een bepaalde grondstof.
Valutaswap
Met een valuta swap kan je een vaste wisselkoers voor een valuta vastzetten. Op die manier kan je jezelf beschermen tegen wisselkoersen die verslechteren.
Debt-equity swap
Bij dit type swap ruilt een bedrijfschuld in voor eigendom. Een bedrijf kan obligaties verkopen in ruil voor aandelen, wat een manier is voor het bedrijf om haar schuldenlast te verkleinen.
Total return swap
De total return swap is ideaal wanneer je een bepaald rendement wilt veiligstellen. Met een total return swap wissel je een variabele beloning (bijvoorbeeld dividend + koerswinst) in voor een vaste vergoeding.
Credit default swap (CDS)
Dit type swap is erg bekend, aangezien het de oorzaak was voor de kredietcrisis van 2008. Met een credit default swap belooft één partij aan een andere partij om de lening + rente te betalen wanneer de oorspronkelijke partij failliet gaat.
Kan je zelf beleggen in swaps?
Het is bij sommige brokers mogelijk om zelf te speculeren in swaps. Met een rente of interest rate swap kan je bijvoorbeeld speculeren op stijgingen of dalingen van de rente.
De waarde van een renteswap hangt af van de ontwikkeling van de marktrente. Wanneer je een renteswap koopt met een vaste rente van 2%, dan zal de waarde van de swap dalen wanneer de rente naar 4% stijgt. Wanneer de rente echter fors daalt, neemt de waarde van de swap toe.

Onderpand en de margin call
Soms moeten partijen extra onderpand storten om aan de verplichtingen te voldoen. Wanneer dit niet lukt, kan er een margin call plaatsvinden. Bij een margin call wordt het onderpand van de tegenpartij automatisch verkocht.
