The Norse mythology-inspired game Valheim currently has seven biomes for players to explore, with two more undeveloped ones on the way. However, each biome often has a distinct feature that makes exploring it tricky, often needing something from the previous biome to survive. This natural progression helps Valheim keep a clear path while giving players room for flexibility and challenge if they so wish.
The currently finished biomes in Valheim include the Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Mountain, Plains, Ocean, and Mistlands. Two other biomes, the Deep North and Ashlands, can be found in the game, but neither is complete, so players have little purpose in visiting either. Developer Iron Gate Studio has shown off a few of their current plans, with Valheim's Ashlands and Deep North seeming to take priority for them now that the Mistlands is out.

Best Order To Visit Each Valheim Biome
Players will always spawn in the Meadows, which is the safest place in the game. Once players have some weapons and armor, the best place to go is the Black Forest. After acquiring bronze/iron tools and armor, the Swamp, followed by the Mountains, are the best places for players to go next. This leaves the Plains and Mistlands, the hardest of the biomes currently in the game, as the last two biomes players should visit. The final biome, the Ocean, can be visited anytime a player has a boat, as they are relatively safe outside the occasional serpent encounter.
How To Progress Through Each Valheim Biome
In the Meadows, players will find Valheim's first boss Eikthyr, who needs to be defeated to acquire the antler pickaxe. This pickaxe will be used to mine copper and tin in the Black Forest. Players will also need to obtain fine wood from trees and surtling cores from Black Forest dungeons to make necessary structures like the smelter and fermentor. The Swamp is the following place players will want to visit, and it is recommended to have poison resistance mead before they go. Swamp dungeons will be filled with scrap iron that is melted back into iron ingots and used to acquire the next stage of gear.
Once a player has the iron gear and frost resistance meads, the Mountains are the next biome to visit. Here, players will battle drakes and mine silver for the next stage of weapons and armor. Valheim's next biome, the Plains, doesn't have a feature restriction that keeps players out, but players will die quickly without silver gear. In the Plains, players will search for Black Metal, which is currently the strongest gear type in the game. Black Metal gear is then used to explore the hardest and last complete biome in the game currently, the Mistlands.
At its core, Valheim offers players a lot of freedom and challenge. Since the Mountain is the only biome requiring any preparation, players can tackle the game in any order. This freedom of choice is one of the many reasons this indie game has become a massive success in the survival market. However, for those who want a clearer path of progression, this is the best order to visit each biome in Valheim.
