Digitization of Cultural Heritage and Business Model Innovation: The Case of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence

Recently, digitization has attracted increasing interest not only in museology and computer science, but also in economics and managerial literature. Scholars have tried to analyse how technological innovation is reshaping the role and mission of museums as producers and distributors of cultural content and investigate the new business model that emerges. The present work aims to investigate the adoption of ICT and innovation processes in museums, and their interaction dynamics between curators and technology developers.

Documenting Abu Simbel: The 3D-COFORM Approach

In 1964 – 1968, the Abu Simbel temple in Egypt was disassembled and reconstructed in a higher position to save it from the flooding caused by the construction of the Aswan Dam. Before the monuments removal to safety, a campaign was carried out by the French IGN, making stereo pairs of photos as photogrammetric documentation of the temples in their original position both as a matter of record and as an aid to planning the removal of the temples. The 3D-COFORM project recovered these original analogue images and used them for creating image-based digital 3D models of the temples and their interiors. The results will then be compared with modern photographic and geometric records of the reassembled temples as an aid to the management and interpretation of the monuments.

Small firms and the digitization of cultural heritage: The case of Centrica and the Uffizi Gallery

Objectives. The aim of this work is to investigate a case study of a university spin-off that contributes to the debate on the relevance of the use of ICT in contemporary economy, through the relevant case of digitization of cultural heritage of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Methodology. According to a long-term case study methodology, we analyse the digitization process from the Nineties until 2014. Data collection integrates semi-structured interviews with information from websites, internal documents, publications, and institutional communication of the museum. Findings. The case study allows to develop interesting implications for the management of enterprises in the new context of increasing use of digital technologies. It highlights the growing opportunities that ICT applied to cultural goods could develop in the future, especially in our country with the widely diffused cultural heritage. Research limits. The work presents a relevant case, nonetheless further investigations are needed in order to shed lights to all the different issues related to the evolution of the analyzed company and the innovation process, in order to extend its results to other firms and contexts. Practical implications. ICT and digital technologies may revolutionize old and traditional businesses and create new markets for Italian companies of Made in Italy and the applications of these new technologies may create new paths for the growth and competitiveness of Italian firms. Originality of the study. The work presents a relevant and an original case study contributing to the debate on the use of ICT in SME, especially analyzing a technological company, that through digital technologies has become a leader in a particular market niche and widely known worldwide.

Virtual Museums and Their Public Perception in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina always has been a place where the East meets the West. Over 1000 years, different cultures, religions and civilizations have left their remains in this small country in Western Balkans. Despite all wars and tragic destructions, today in the heart of Sarajevo one can find mosques, Catholic and Orthodox churches and Jewish synagogues next to each other and people of different nations and religions living together in mutual respect and friendship. Multiethnic spirit of Bosnia and Herzegovina lives through its cultural heritage.
