A tarpaulin, commonly known simply as a tarp, is a sturdy, flexible fabric or plastic sheet primarily used to cover objects and create temporary shelters. The word "tarpaulin" originates from the Dutch word tar meaning "pitch" or "tar" and paulin meaning "canvas" or "sailcloth". Indeed, early tarps dating back to the 16th century were made from canvas or linen coated in tar or pitch.

High-Density Polyethylene Tarps

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) tarps are among the most durable tarp options available. Made from woven or non-woven HDPE fabric, these tarps can withstand years of outdoor exposure and harsh conditions without breaking down. The ultraviolet inhibitors added to HDPE give it excellent resistance to sunlight damage. It is also impervious to moisture, retaining a waterproof barrier for the life of the product.

Vinyl Tarps

As one of the most waterproof materials, vinyl tarps are a go-to option for applications requiring maximum moisture resistance such as boats, trucks, and equipment. Their non-porous PVC (polyvinyl chloride) composition creates an impenetrable barrier to liquid. Vinyl tarps maintain their waterproof integrity in all weather.

Fabric Tarps

Breathable polyester and nylon fabric provide an affordable tarp alternative suitable for lower-stakes uses. While not as waterproof as vinyl or HDPE, fabric tarps allow moisture vapor to escape, preventing condensation buildup. Their lightweight mesh-style weaves make fabric tarps cool, flexible, and quick-drying.

Common Tarpaulin Sizes

Tarps are manufactured in a variety of standard sizes to accommodate different coverage needs. Understanding common dimension options helps select the appropriately scaled tarp for any job:

4x6 Tarps

4x6 tarps measure 4 feet by 6 feet, providing coverage for smaller tasks. They function well as drop cloths, workbenches, and vehicle cargo liners.

8x10 Tarps

Moving up in size, 8x10 tarps offer 8 feet by 10 feet of coverage. Their space makes 8x10s excellent for outdoor parties, vehicle and equipment short-term covers, and material lay-downs.

10x12 Tarps

Nearing maximum truck bed coverage, 10x12 tarps span 10 feet by 12 feet. Ideal for flatbeds, box trucks, and large work vehicle loads, 10x12s also perform well as temporary carports or tool shelters.

10x20 Tarps

For expansive coverage of long-term outdoor projects or product storage, consider 10x20 tarps stretching 10 feet by 20 feet. At 200 square feet, their scale accommodates equipment, building, agricultural, and bulk material applications.

10x30 Tarps

The largest standard size available, 10x30 tarps measure an ample 10 feet by 30 feet for 300 square feet of coverage. Ideal for commercial endeavors like site development, landscape installations, event shelters, and more.

Reinforcement Types

Tarps utilize various reinforcements that prolong product life by strengthening vulnerable areas against wear and tear:

Hem Weights

Weighted plastic or vinyl strips sewn inside the bottom tarp hem keep it anchored without additional tying or pegging. Filling the weighted hem, fine sand or plastic beads prevent lifting from the wind while maintaining a clean-lined edge. Hem weights eliminate flapping at the skirt.

D-Rings

Reinforced D-shaped metal rings can replace certain grommets, facilitating tie-downs with bungees or straps instead of ropes. D-rings provide sturdy pivoting connection points around the Tarpaulin perimeter.

Rope Channels

Internal rope channels are vinyl or fabric tubes sewn directly into tarp edges. Offering protection against abrasion, these channels allow tug lines to tie down the tarp without directly contacting vulnerable fabric. Rope channels last longer than tying directly to Heavy Duty Tarpaulin material.

Grommets

Grommets, often made from rust-proof aluminum or heavy-duty plastic, reinforce the tarp perimeter. Spaced approximately 6-12 inches apart depending on tarp size, grommets allow ropes, straps, or tension wires to pass through and secure the tarp in place. Proper spacing distribution prevents overstraining any single grommet point.
