Having the knowledge of how to cook and manage aspects of ahousehold through a class is vital in today’s society. Although many may think that a class isn’t needed to teach about the basic necessities, having a class solely devoted to these aspects is exactly what we need in school.
Things like learning how to make more than a grilled cheese or how to sew is something that everyone should learn at a young age.
Home economic classes weren’t taught until the early 20th century. An example that had the most impact was the “Treatise on Domestic Economy for the Use of Young Ladies at Home,” written by Catharine Beecher. Beecher argued that it was important to teach domestic life and apply scientific principles to things like cooking and housekeeping. Home economic classes would help teens develop skills in family financing, nutrition, cooking and other various skills for life.
Growing from childhood to adulthood, studentsneed training in things that Beecher argued we need in schools. For example, in home economics you may learn, when injured, don’t leave an open wound untreated, or how to deal with household fires, which would be beneficial for high school students who are transitioning into adulthood.
Not only does home economics teach students about cooking and safety but it also builds responsibility. It teaches teens to use the techniques they learnedin class in their home life. When teens learn how to take care of their household and themselves, it helps them to become more responsible at home. Home economics also teaches students how to be savvy consumers.
It helps students learn how to budget and spend their money wisely. This class teaches things that teens, who are growing into adulthood, should utilize in their everyday life, like patience, attentiveness, situational awareness, etc. Society would benefit greatly with having at least four years of home economics class.
As seen in this article, home economics would highly impact society today. Having these classes for at least four years will help teens to grow up to be more responsible and more aware of how to take care of themselves in adulthood, rather then depending on their parents for basic things. With these classes, parents can have a little more faith in their children when leaving them alone.
