Rainbow Six Siege Ranks Explained (2024)

Rainbow Six Siege is an award-winning multiplayer first-person shooter game developed by Ubisoft Montreal. The game is available on a wide range of platforms, such as PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, and has been a mainstay in the first-person shooter genre for almost 8 years now.

As part of Operation Solar Raid in 2022, the game altered the existing ranking system into a new ranked system called Ranked 2.0. This new mechanism provides a more competitive environment, and it isn’t as easy to reach the Champion rank as before.

In this article, we will be thoroughly going through the new ranking system in Rainbow Six Siege and answering common questions like what the different ranks are, what the minimum level to play Ranked is, how you can climb to the top faster, and more!

How Does Ranked 2.0 Work in Rainbow Six?

Rainbow Six Siege Ranks Explained (1)

Ranked 2.0 has separated the Skill (MMR) and the visible rank of the players. Now, Ranked Points (RP) will be the main source of progression instead of MMR. However, MMR will still be used for matchmaking and to determine how many RP you’ll gain or lose.

If there’s a big gap between your visible rank and Skill, you will get more Rank Points (70-80) when winning. Contrarily, when your MMR and your visible rank are almost equal, you’ll gain less RP upon winning and lose more after a defeat. This is what makes the Ranked mode much more competitive than before.

Moreover, if Platinum players lose against Copper players, their Skill will be reduced substantially, and the skill of the Copper guys will increase much more. However, if the Platinum players lose to Diamond, Emerald, or Champion players, their Skill rating wouldn’t take much of a hit.

Matchmaking in Ranked 2.0

Players are matched against each other depending on their Skill. Your team will mainly be matched against a squad having the same Skill rating, but not necessarily the same rank.

For instance, if you’re in Bronze, you can be matched against a Gold team if both of you have similar Skill.

Rank Progression in Ranked 2.0

Let’s see how the Rank progression works with an example.

After a rank reset, all the players start from Copper V, but their Skill remains the same. Now, let’s say a Champion-ranked player with +5000 Skill starts playing from Copper V, then there’s a drastic gap between his Skill rating and the visible rank.

Therefore, to progress them quickly toward their real rank, the game will give them almost the maximum number of Rank Points (80) upon winning. On the other hand, if they lose a game, only 9 RP will be deducted.

This will continue until the player reaches the Diamond rank. Since Diamond is close to Champion, the player will now lose or gain around 35 RP, depending on the game result. But as they progress further, the RP deduction will be a bit more and the gain will be less.

In short: the closer your visible rank gets to your Skill (MMR), the more even your RP gain or loss becomes. This can happen quickly if you finished in Silver or Gold in the last season, or it can take some time if you were in the higher ranks like Diamond or Champion.

What are the Ranks in Rainbow Six Siege?

The ranks in R6 are as follows, from the starting level to the highest level:

  • Copper: V, IV, III, II, I
  • Bronze: V, IV, III, II, I
  • Silver: V, IV, III, II, I
  • Gold: V, IV, III, II, I
  • Platinum: V, IV, III, II, I
  • Emerald: V, IV, III, II, I
  • Diamond: V, IV, III, II, I
  • Champion

In Rainbow Six Siege, the ranking system is divided into 8 defined tiers. There were 7 before, but Emerald came as a new addition. Seven of the ranks are further split into five levels, while there are no levels for the Champion rank.

Rainbow Six Siege Ranks Explained (2)

Copper V is the lowest rank, and players there have between 1-100 points, while Champion is the highest rank, needing about 5000 points in order to achieve that rank. You receive Rank Points after winning games and eliminating enemies to climb up the ranking ladder.

What Level is Required to Play Ranked in R6?

To play ranked, you need to be at least Level 50.

Before that, you can practice and gain experience in quick matches. This is done so that the most ‘tryhard’ mode of the game isn’t flooded with players who don’t have any understanding of the basic mechanics and tactics of the game.

By the time you reach level 50, you should have enough understanding of how the game works to compete in a highly competitive environment.

Rank Rewards in Rainbow Six Siege

Ranking up in the game not only improves the competition in your games but also rewards the player with different cosmetic skins, charms, and reward packs called Alpha packs.

Rainbow Six Siege Ranks Explained (3)

Rewards are obtained at the start of the new season based on the performance of the previous one.

The most common rewards are:

  • Charms: Skins for your weapons.
  • Card Backgrounds: Indicate your progression to other players on their screens while selecting operators.
  • Alpha Packs: These contain random cosmetic rewards such as charms.

How Do I Rank Up Faster in Rainbow Six Siege?

Here are some tips that can help you maximize your competitive potential in Rainbow Six Siege:

1. Know the Maps

Map knowledge is essential and a prerequisite to excelling in the game.

It is highly beneficial to have a good understanding of the terrain you play in. Why? This way, you can easily figure out the best attacking points, flanks, and defensive positions for each map.

There are 24 maps in the game at the moment, so frequently playing on each map can easily help build up your grip on it. More maps are to be included soon, so keep an eye on that as well.

2. Keep Communicating with your Teammates

Ranked gameplay is not just about you: it’s about the whole squad. Don’t try to be a one-man-army and take on multiple enemies at once since it is extremely unlikely that you’ll be able to solo carry your matches, unless you’ve been placed in a rank that’s way too low.

The goal is to communicate well with the team to make unified decisions instantly.

You need to keep up with your teammates’ commands and, at the same time, inform them in any way possible. You can look out for enemies using cameras and disclose their location to your teammates.

3. Play with a Squad

It is always better when you have people you know well around you! To rank up more efficiently, it is recommended to form a squad you play with every day.

This way, the team synergy will automatically win matches for you! Every player will know their role, and communication will also improve since you guys know each other’s voices. Furthermore, it’s always good to play with people that you know you can rely on, since you can always end up with trolls, griefers, or teammates that are quite simply subpar if you’re queueing by yourself.

In short: build out your friend list by adding players who you liked playing with, so that you can always invite at least one or two players that you can rely on to your lobby if you’re going to grind competitive.

4. Analyze and Improve Your Gameplay

Nobody can be a perfect R6 Siege player, and everyone (yes, even the pros!) have weaknesses. Your weak point is exactly what can give the enemy an edge. Therefore, it is crucial to review your gameplay after each game and keep working on yourself.

You can benefit from the Match Replay feature newly added to the game. Try improving your weaker points, failing strategies, and decision-making skills. You’d be surprised at the insights you’ll come to when you review your own footage after a game. During a game, you’re in a stressful situation where you have to keep an eye on a dozen things at the same time; when reviewing a demo in peace you have a lot more time to analyze everything you did.

Rainbow Six Siege Ranks: FAQs

Is Emerald a Rank in Rainbow Six Siege?

Yes, Emerald is the newly added rank in R6 between the Platinum and Diamond ranks. It has been added to bridge the extensive gap between these two ranks.

Does Rank Matter in Rainbow Six Siege?

Rank is useful in enhancing your competitive experience by matching you with opponents of the same Skill level. As you rank up, there’s no doubt that your gameplay will improve.

Although your Skill rating matters more than your rank, it’s still an achievement to reach the Champion tier. Also, the better your rank, the better the in-game rewards you’ll get.

How is rank calculated in Rainbow Six Siege?

Ranks are calculated based on the Ranking Points you gain after each game. You will gain more RP if the difference between your visible rank and Skill is greater. But once both of them get closer, your RP gain or loss will even out, or you might gain less and lose more.
