What are managed volumes? ›

Managed volumes allow the creation of governed storage for working with files without the overhead of external locations and storage credentials. You do not need to specify a location when creating a managed volume, and all file access for data in managed volumes is through paths managed by Unity Catalog.

Partitions and logical drives on basic disks are called basic volumes. You can only create basic volumes on basic disks. You can add more space to existing primary partitions and logical drives by extending them into adjacent, contiguous unallocated space on the same disk.

Volume Types. VDS supports five volume types: simple, spanned, striped, mirrored, and striped with parity. Simple, spanned, and striped volumes are non-fault tolerant; mirrored and parity volumes are fault tolerant.
