What is physical and logical partitioning? ›

A physical partition is a partition that is created on a physical hard drive or SSD, while a logical partition is a partition that is created within an existing physical drive, as an extended partition. In Windows, you can create both physical and logical partitions using the Disk Management tool.

Physical disks are automatically defined by Windows to represent the entire disk, and must never be defined by the user. Logical partitions must be defined by the user to represent a specific partition in a disk. These partitions must be logical partitions or drives contained in an extended partition.

A primary partition is a type of partition that can be directly bootable by the operating system. It is limited to a maximum of four partitions on a single disk using the MBR partitioning scheme. In contrast, a logical drive is created within an extended partition and does not have the direct boot capability.
