In financial year 2023, there were a total of 229 ports in India. Out of these 217 of them were non-major ports, while the rest of them were major ports. These figures were the same as the previous year.
India’s non-major seaports
In the financial year 2022, the concentration of non-major ports was high in Gujarat and Maharashtra. Each of these states in India had 48 non-major ports. The volume of cargo handled in non-major ports across India in that year was above 604 million metric tons.
India’s major seaports
India hosts 12 major seaports. Out of these ports, Deendayal seaport which is located in Gujarat had handled the highest volume of cargo in 2022. In the same year, these major ports in India handled the highest volume of petroleum cargo, with an average of 2.2 days turnaround time.
