Can you only use Google Pay when the app is open? ›
Google Wallet does not currently offer a native way to disable it from working unless the app is open. If you have another payment app that registers as a NFC payment option, you can set 'Except when another app is open' in settings, that IS available.
How do I change my default payment app for NFC? ›- On your Android device, open the Settings app.
- In the search bar, type “NFC.”
- Tap NFC Contactless payments. Payment default.
- Select Google Pay.

Hold your device close to the contactless payment terminal (NFC-enabled terminal). You don't need to open the Google Pay app specifically. The NFC technology allows your device to communicate with the terminal when it's near it.
Paying with Google Pay
Just wake up your Android phone and hold it near the terminal until you see a check mark. You don't even need to open the app. Use Google Pay to check out even faster online and in apps. Once you've added a card, you won't need to enter your payment info again.
You must have NFC turned on to make contactless payments.
