Formula: (length x width x gauge) / 6 = yards needed. Length and width are in inches and gauge is in stitches per inch. The division by 6 is to convert the answer from square inches to yards. For example, if you'd like a scarf 48" long and 8" wide using a worsted weight yarn, (48 x 8 x 5) / 6 = 320 yards.
I myself like to weigh the amount of yarn each row or round uses when I'm nearing the end of the project (or yarn!). This way I can make sure I have enough left to bind off. Depending on the type of bind off I plan on using, I know I have to reserve about twice or three times the amount of the last row.
Here is a calculation you can use to determine approximately how many skeins you may need (for a medium-tight knit blanket). You can replace the 50 x 60 with whatever measurements you have: A blanket 50x60: 50x60=3000 divide by 350 = 8.57 - 9 skeins.
But if you plan to use the blanket often I would recommend a non-wool yarn. Below are some great options! Bernat Big Blanket Yarn from Michaels – you will need about 6-8 skeins to make a blanket the size of mine.
A very rough guide to how much yarn you'll need for a crochet blanket is: 3 – 4 balls for a baby blanket, suitable for a pram, bassinet, or cot. 6 – 8 balls for a small blanket, suitable for a toddler bed or to use as a small sofa throw. 15 – 17 balls for a twin size blanket, or a large sofa throw.
Mohair. This fluffy yarn is seeing a resurgence and I'm 100% here for it. Mohair is derived from Angora goats (not to be confused with Angora rabbits!). Used on its own or held double with another yarn, mohair adds an interesting level of texture and warmth.
Bulky and super bulky yarns are excellent choices for crocheting and knitting blankets as they create a cozy and warm texture, but are much quicker to work up! These yarns are thicker and heavier than other yarns, making them ideal for projects that require a lot of coverage.
You'll need 6 skeins (108 yards total) to make a throw approximately 51 x 60- inches. The Alize chenille yarn is SO soft and comes in pretty variegated colors as well as solids. I loved it so much I bought more yarn to make a second throw as a gift!
How much yarn is needed for a crochet temperature blanket? Most blankets will take 10-15 skeins depending on how many colours you use and how large it is. I started with 10 and have run out of one or two so far (up to November).
The standard advice on whether you have enough yarn to complete one more row is to stretch out your knitting and, if the length of yarn is 4 times the width of your work, you should have enough.
If you just want to know how much is left, you can still calculate it manually with just a little bit of math. Look at what the label says and divide the length by the weight, and then multiply that by the current weight. Make sure you're using the same unit of measurement so you don't throw off your numbers.
