Can I make my own ceiling medallion? ›

One such element is the ceiling medallion, a decorative piece that has been used for centuries to add elegance and grandeur to interior spaces. In recent years, antique ceiling medallions have made a comeback in modern interior design, bringing a touch of old-world charm to contemporary spaces.

“Measure the length and width of your room in feet. Multiple the length and the width, then divide by 7. This will give you the proportionate medallion size in inches. For instance… a 10‐by‐14 foot room calculation would be: 10 feet x 14 feet = 140 square feet divided by 7 = 20 inches diameter.

Installation - No Fixture

Run a 1/4" continuous bead of adhesive around the outer edge and randomly in other areas on the back of the ceiling medallion. Press the medallion up into place using a few finish nails or screws to secure the medallion while the adhesive dries.

Not a problem, and you should purchase the medallion you like, whether it has a pre-cut hole or not. Cutting the hole in the center of our medallions is easy to do.

Before mounting it to the ceiling, I primed and painted the medallion. I like to use the same color as our trim paint (BM Simply White), but in a matte finish. The result is very much like raw plaster, and offsets it just a touch from the ceiling paint (BM Moonlight White).

To remove a medallion, climb a ladder with a sharp utility knife or razor blade mounted in a scraper-style holder, a wide putty knife or taping knife, and a smaller putty knife or, even better, a small pry bar with a thin blade, such as a Sharkgrip pry bar (www.sharkcorp.com).

Spread construction adhesive on the back of the medallion, press the medallion into place, and secure it with screws that are inset enough so you can later spread a little filler over the screws to hide them. Finish up with a layer of paint.

Run a bead of caulk all the way around the perimeter of the medallion and position it on the ceiling. The caulk will hold it in place until you're ready to permanently secure the ceiling medallion.

Today it is very common to see ceiling medallions used in many applications. The trend seems to be moving away from the traditional white finish to more exocentric faux finishes.

The Lighting Fixture

The light fixture will be the main focal point in the room, so the ceiling medallion must match it. You can choose a ceiling medallion larger or smaller than the lighting, but room size is still important.

Before the light bulb, all forms of indoor lighting — from candles to whale-oil lamps to gas and kerosene lanterns — involved a flame, Winkler says. “The byproduct of all of those was soot, and the medallion, the center, helped conceal what could have been a ring of soot on the ceiling,” she says.

By far the most common ceiling lining material is plasterboard. However, for a decorative ceiling you can turn to cladding. Cladding, by definition, is a decorative skin. There are many types of cladding which can achieve a timber look.

The medallion can be bigger or smaller than the fixture. You don't want it to be the same size as the fixture as this will make the two objects form a virtual column, and this will make the room appear to be smaller than its actual size.

You should coordinate colors of the ceiling medallions and other decorative architectural embellishments with the overall color theme of the room. If ceiling medallions are used in traditional decor, the details can be highlighted in a tone down paint, creating a subtle tone-on-tone effect.
