Should a ceiling medallion be larger than the light fixture? ›

The medallion can be bigger or smaller than the fixture. You don't want it to be the same size as the fixture as this will make the two objects form a virtual column, and this will make the room appear to be smaller than its actual size.

Since ceiling medallions have been an ornamental item for the home since the 19th century, they are not about to go away any time soon! They add architectural interest and decorative detail to the ceiling, which is sometimes overlooked, and enhance the light fixture installed below it.

“Measure the length and width of your room in feet. Multiple the length and the width, then divide by 7. This will give you the proportionate medallion size in inches. For instance… a 10‐by‐14 foot room calculation would be: 10 feet x 14 feet = 140 square feet divided by 7 = 20 inches diameter.

Adhesive. You can use any adhesive that is rated for use with polyurethane (check the back of the label) -- we have had great success using Red Devil Construction Adhesive, LoctitePowergrab and PL Premium Polyurethane Adhesive, all of which work well and are readily available at most home improvement stores.

The medallion might come loose easily. If not, look carefully over the surface for divots that might show where screws were puttied over. Not a problem, and you should purchase the medallion you like, whether it has a pre-cut hole or not. Cutting the hole in the center of our medallions is easy to do. Just about any sharp knife, and certainly tools such as Roto-Zip or drill, make quick work of cutting though the poylurethane foam.

In America a medallion is a medallic item larger than three and one-eighth inches, in Europe it is larger than eighty millimeters (80mm). The term is frequently misused in sales literature for a medal of any size and has even appeared on medals of less than 3-inch diameter.

A ceiling medallion makes a wonderful accent for a wide range of ceiling lighting types, from decorative chandeliers to ceiling fans.

To summarize, you should measure your table's length and width and subtract 12 inches from each measurement. Your fixture should not exceed either one of these numbers. This measurement ensures there is 6 inches on either side of the pendant for headroom and maneuverability.
