How to Make a Magical Unicorn Valentine Box
Supplies
- 1 small cardboard box
- 1 8×10″ piece of cardboard
- White wrapping paper
- Pastel curling ribbon
- 2 gold (or any unicorn appropriate colored) gift bags
- Pink felt or construction paper
- Faux flowers
- Packing tape and/or scotch tape
- Glue Gun and/or school glue/glue stick
- Wire cutters
- Scissors
- Black marker
- 2 small paperclips
- Free unicorn horn and ears template
Instructions:
Prepare the Cardboard Box
Steps 1: Tape the bottom of the cardboard box closed.
Step 2: Turn the box on its bottom. Fold the two smaller flaps on the left and right into each side of the box and tape them to the inner walls of the box.
Step 3: Cut about 5/8” off from each of the two remaining flaps. Tape the two flaps in place as shown (this is your card slot).
Step 4: Wrap your box in the white wrapping paper just like how you would wrap a present.
Step 5: Using your scissors, cut out the opening of the box that the wrapping paper has covered.
Decorate the Unicorn Valentine Box
Steps 6: Using your wire cutters, cut off the heads of the flowers from the stems. You can use scissors, but they may not be strong enough to cut through some stems.
Step 7: Using a glue gun, attach the flowers to the box, in front of the card slot. You can try to use glue, but I have found the flowers tend to fall off using white school or glue sticks.
Step 8: Cut out your horn and ears from template sheets. Open one of your gift bags and trace and cut the horn and set it aside. Open the second gift bag and trace and cut the large unicorn ears and set them aside. Trace and cut the small unicorn ears onto the felt or construction paper and set aside.
Step 9: Trace and cut the large unicorn ears onto the 8×10″ piece of cardboard BUT extend an extra 1” at the bottom and set them aside. The extra 1″ tab will allow you to glue the ears onto the box.
Step 10: Using your glue gun or glue, attach the large unicorn ears you cut from the gift bag to the unicorn ears you cut from the cardboard. Using your glue gun or glue, attach the small unicorn ears to the large unicorn ears.
Step 11: Take your unicorn horn and roll it closed until it just overlaps the edges and using your glue gun or glue, secure it closed.
Use a paper clip at the top and bottom to keep it from rolling open until the glue dries.
Step 12: Using your glue gun or glue, attach the large unicorn ears to the back of your box. Using your glue gun or glue, attach the unicorn horn to the top of the box, just behind the card slot.
Steps 13: Cut several 8-10” pieces of the curling ribbon and using the edge of your scissors, curl the pieces.
Step 14: Once you have a nice handful of unicorn “mane”, gather it at the top and use one of the paperclips you used for the unicorn horn in Step 11 to hold them together.
Step 15: Using your glue gun or glue, attach the unicorn “mane” just behind the flowers, so you have one bunch on the left and one on the right. Using your marker, draw a face and if you have extra felt, you can make some cute cheeks!
I hope your daughter enjoys making this unicorn Valentine card box and putting all the cards she receives in it. This Valentine’s Day will be extra sweet with her very own special box!
