Take out cash with a tap

We closed the contactless cash service for smartphone on 30 June 2023

You can no longer use the contactless cash service to make cash machine withdrawals with your phone.

For more information, please visit our Contactless Mobile page.

Who can use it?

If you have a current account with us, you can use contactless cash. You just need a contactless debit card, or an Android smartphone that’s registered with our Barclays app1. Just so you know, contactless cash doesn’t work with your Barclaycard.

We’ve thought about accessibility too – if you’d like to, you can use your smartphone screen, customised to support your needs, to manage your cash withdrawals.

Using contactless cash with a debit card

At one of our cash machines

You can use contactless cash at around 1,200 of our cash machines. Simply tap your card on the machine’s reader, enter your normal debit card PIN on the machine and follow the on-screen instructions.

If you use your debit card at one of our cash machines, you can take out up to £300 per transaction, up to your daily limit.

In branch

Head to an assisted service counter (ASC) or quick service point (QSP) in one of our branches – there are more than 500 across the UK – then follow the same method as above.

If you’re using contactless cash with your debit card in a branch, you can take out up to £100 per transaction, up to your daily limit.

Using contactless cash with a smartphone

At one of our cash machines

To take out cash using your Android smartphone, you need to register with our app and turn on its Contactless2 feature. You also need to add your debit card within the app – you can do this in the ‘Contactless cash’ section.

Once you’re set up, visit one of our eligible cash machines and tap your phone onto its reader. Your phone will display a message confirming that your request has been sent. Then, enter your PIN on the machine and follow the on-screen instructions.

Tapping your smartphone onto one of our cash machines means you can take out up to £300 per transaction, with a limit of £300 per day (or up to £800 per day if you’re a Premier customer).

In branch

You can also use your smartphone to withdraw cash in a branch. Once you’re set up, visit an ASC or QSP in one of our branches, and follow the same process.

You can take out up to £100 per transaction, up to your card’s daily limit.

Using your smartphone to set up a payment in advance

If you’re using your smartphone to withdraw cash, you can set up the transaction ahead of time. Simply open our app, select ‘Contactless cash’ and enter how much you’d like to take out. Then, when you’re ready to make the withdrawal, type your card’s PIN and tap your smartphone onto the machine’s reader to finish.

At one of our cash machines

You can take out up to £100 per transaction, up to a £300 daily limit.

In branch

You can take out up to £100 per transaction, up to your card’s daily limit.

Whichever smartphone method you use, if you enter your PIN incorrectly 3 times, the card in your Barclays app will be locked until the issue has been fixed.

You can still use your debit card to take out cash on top of any smartphone withdrawals – read our transaction limits under ‘Using contactless cash with a debit card’ above.
