Here's what I think happened: upon adding the Zinc to the vinegar (or acetic acid CH3COOH) it reacts to form hydrogen gas (the bubbles) in the reaction Zn(s) + 2CH3COOH(aq) = Zn(CH3COO)2(aq) +H2(g); during this reaction the Zinc is Oxidised (it looses electrons) and becomes positively charged: *Zn = Zn^2+ + 2e-*.

Zinc is insoluble in water but reacts readily with non-oxidising acids, forming zinc (II) and releasing hydrogen. It also dissolves in strong bases. It reacts readily when heated with oxygen to give zinc oxide. Direct reactions with halogens will also occur.

All zinc galvanized coatings are more corrosion resistant than bare iron or steel. Like all ferrous metals, zinc corrodes when exposed to air and water. However, zinc corrodes at a rate of 1/30 of that for steel. Also like other ferrous metals, zinc corrodes or rusts at different rates depending on its environment (8).
