So I know earlier I stated that everyone has tried Hot Buttered Rum…but to be honest Ihadn’t. I always assumed it was too strong of a co*cktail for me. I like my drinks girly. Well…I have been living in the dark! Maybe adding the chocolate won me over, but I am SO obsessed with this drink. Obsessed might not be strong enough. Can I sip it for ever? For every occasion? Even in the summer? I just might. Chocolate Hot Buttered Rum for the win!
The great thing about the homemade mix is that you can FREEZE IT. You can keep this gold in your freezer and bring it out whenever you need your fix of warmth and holiday cheer. It’s like Hot Chocolate on steroids. It’s amazing!
Hot Buttered Rum Ingredients
Hot buttered rum is made from just a few ingredients. For this recipe, you just need the pre-made mix, plus rum and hot water. The mix is made from butter, dark brown sugar, cinnamon and cocoa powder. Not much to it, but it’s SO flavorful. Like hot chocolate but with rum….and butter. I guess the name of this drink is really fitting, huh?
How to Make Chocolate Hot Buttered Rum
Well, since we’re starting with a homemade mix, the part where we make the actual drink is SO simple. And that’s exactly the way I like it. Grab your mix out of the refrigerator, and 5 minutes later you’ve got your hot rum drink ready to serve!
Here’s a quick rundown of the recipe:
Grab your glass and put 2-3 tablespoons of the mix in.
Pour in about 2 1/2 ounces of rum.
Top with 3 ounces of boiling hot water.
Stir it all together!
Top it off with marshmallows (whipped cream would also be delish).
This drink is so chocolatey, so warm, and so cozy. Exactly what we all need during the holiday season.
So, let’s recap. MAKE THIS MIX for yourself and all of your friends this holiday season. Keep it in your fridge or freezer for anytime you need a warm up. Sip. Feel good about life. Repeat. Enjoy your Hot Buttered Rum! Cheers!

Issac: A dark rum would go well with hot chocolate. As for recommendations for someone who is new to rums, Don Q Anejo wins hands down as the best buy considering flavor and price.
By creaming the butter with the sugar and spices you can also better avoid that dreaded oil slick appearance, and when choosing a rum, go for something big and rich. The Demerara rums from El Dorado work wonders, as does a robust Jamaican rum like Coruba, or something dark and mellow like Zaya or Zacapa.
While both are hot, alcoholic beverages, their ingredients differ. Tom and Jerrys are also often made with rum, though they can also be made with whiskey or vodka. Both are also spiced. However, a batter instead of butter (see what we did there?) is used to make a Tom and Jerry rich and creamy.
Chocolate to pair with rum: which is the best? Dark chocolate is the best accompaniment to aged rums, while milk chocolate or gianduia are also suitable for younger rums. In general, the older the rum, the more the cocoa percentage must increase.
Rum: Dark or spiced rum can give your hot chocolate an exciting Caribbean twist. Rum's natural sweetness and spicy undertones complement the rich cocoa beautifully, creating a blend that is smooth, warming and deeply comforting. Brandy: A shot of brandy can lend an enticing depth of flavour to your hot chocolate.
It's good over just about anything--YUM!! Use a good dark rum such as Myers or Captain Morgan Spiced Rum, and don't skip the fresh squeezed lime juice, which makes this sauce pop! I hope you enjoy!"
To make a drink, pour a shot (1 1/2 ounces) of dark rum into a mug, add a tablespoon of the batter, then top it with hot water. For a slightly sweeter drink, add a teaspoon of honey. Store the batter in a well-sealed jar in the refrigerator until needed.
Spices: Grab cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves to spice up the butter mixture. Rum: We loved the flavor of spiced rum in this drink. Dark rum would also work well. Or, make the drink with bourbon or whiskey.
Known by many names around the world – including "Dark n' Stormy" in Bermuda, "Gangsters' Paradise Cooler" in Jamaica, and even simply as "Booze Soda" in some parts of the United States – this drink packs a powerful punch with its perfectly-balanced blend of sweet-and-sour flavors.
I like Kraken, you could also use Meyer's or a spiced rum like Captain Morgan. Boiling water. Cinnamon sticks: This will be a built in stirrer and add aroma.
The darker the rum, the better the pairing. Rum pairs well with fruity chocolate inclusions, but also chocolate with warm spice, ginger, & nutmeg. Chocolate covered marzipan also pairs well with Rum. Lighter rum pairs better with lighter chocolate, especially milk chocolate and caramel blends.
Experience tells us that aged rums combine very well with chocolates that have intense flavors thanks to a high percentage of cocoa, generally around 80%. Rums such as Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva has such a smooth and delicious taste that combines particularly well with the intensity and bitterness of the best cocoa.
The Milk Punch is a classic co*cktail that traditionally combines brandy or rum with sugar, vanilla extract and milk (of course). Its history is extensive, dating to at least the 1600s, when the recipe first appeared in print.
You could certainly drink it as-is at this point, but if you want the kick… then proceed with the dark rum. It's a fabulous complement to the flavors in the apple cider mixture and tastes oh-so-delicious going down. Grab your coziest blanket and your favorite mug… cheers!
White rums are the most popular base for rum and co*ke, though you might also really enjoy it with an aged rum. We recommend putting the rum in the freezer for ultimate chill—that way the ice will melt slower.
For crafting delicious co*cktails, consider these popular rum choices: Bacardi Superior (White Rum): A versatile and light-bodied rum suitable for a wide range of co*cktails like Mojitos and Daiquiris. The Kraken Black Spiced Rum: Well-suited for co*cktails due to its robust and spiced flavor profile.
