Tapes also use less electricity than drives, although some consider the cost benefits of this reduced energy usage as minimal. However, that doesn't mean tape is the perfect backup format by any stretch. Magnetic tape is a sequential access device, and has no addressing mechanism.

Durability and longevity of tapes

Unlike hard drives or SSDs, there are no active parts on tapes, so they have a lower risk of damage. In addition, tapes can be stored in optimum conditions that may extend their lifetime.

Since data is sequentially written on tapes, backing up large amounts of data can be time-consuming. Restoring backed-up data also takes a long time. Consequently, the business might face a longer downtime than expected. Tape drives do not grant random access like hard drives.

Tape storage has several advantages over other storage media, such as hard disk drives (HDDs) or solid state drives (SSDs). Tape storage is cheaper, more durable, more energy-efficient, and more scalable than HDDs or SSDs.

Tapes also suffer from some of the expected shortcomings of older technologies. Reading from and writing to tapes takes longer than other backup methods. There is a higher chance of data corruption or problems reading data from tapes than, say, disk-based backup.

As mentioned above, while tapes do have a much longer lifespan than HDDs and SSDs, they're not invulnerable to physical and environmental damage. Tapes must be kept in the correct environment, away from high sources of heat, humidity and strong magnetic fields.

Long used as a lower cost, reliable, and secure option for storing cold data (not commonly accessed or used regularly), backup tape storage is still a part of many organizations' data storage and backup strategy. However, most are by now at least considering cloud storage as a future goal.

Some manufacturers claim that tape can last up to thirty years, making it a suitable medium for archiving. The problem with that number is that magnetic tapes only last that long under absolutely optimum environmental conditions. That means storing magnetic tapes in environments with stable humidity and temperatures.

How slow is tape storage? ›

Even an uncompressed tape has read speeds up to 400 MBps. This rate is far faster than the first-generation LTO tapes, which had a maximum speed of 20 MBps for an uncompressed tape or 40 MBps for a compressed tape. However, it's still much slower than the access times of disk and flash.

Obsolescence isn't the only time-critical threat to tape backup, either: tape also degrades over time. If not stored properly, it's subject to oxidation, and uneven stresses could stretch or distort it. Its magnetic properties are susceptible to decline too.

Limitations. The storage of an analog signal on tape works well, but is not perfect. In particular, the granular nature of the magnetic material adds high-frequency noise to the signal, generally referred to as tape hiss. Also, the magnetic characteristics of tape are not linear.

Some drawbacks of tape technology include the following: Sequential storage. Tape drives use a sequential access approach to reading and writing data. That means they must start at the beginning of the tape and roll through it to access specific data or write new data.

Tape Drives are read/written to at 140MB/s, making them much faster than BluRays. The problem is that tape drives cost roughly $2000 each. So tapes only become economical when you're storing 25+ TB of data. The other problem is that to prevent "shoe shining", you need a fast storage system to feed the tape drive.

Most manufacturers estimate that LTO tapes will provide dependable data storage for 15-30 years. However, LTO archives require precise storage conditions. Slight deviations in temperature or humidity can affect storage life. Ideally, LTOs should be stored at 61 to 77°F (16 to 25°C).

One of the advantages of tape recording is the ability to erase and reuse tapes without the loss of recording quality. Through an electromagnetic erase head, a recorded signal can be removed, and the tape can be reused. If the recording tape breaks, it can be spliced and repaired.

Tape storage is not used only for backup in case of system failure, but also for archiving data for long-term storage. Although the components of a tape storage system vary depending on numerous factors, it generally consists of magnetic tape media (e.g. LTO), tape drives and tape automation.
