The Dr. Sally Ride quarter was part of a series celebrating American Women
IT may be time to bust out those coins as a rare quarter sold online for $10,181.
Rare coins are a dime a dozen but ones that have real monetary value are scarce.
As millions of quarters, dimes, nickels, and more are minted, mistakes are bound to happen and this is what collectors look for.
In fact, one coin connoisseur bought the very first Dr. Sally Ride Quarter struck on a Jefferson Nickel planchet.
Due to this rare error and high grade, it sold for $10,181.
The coin was certified and graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as NGC MS-67 - sharply struck with few imperfections.

“It is the only example known for the Dr. Sally Ride quarter and one of only a few of the whole American Women Quarter series," famed coin dealer Jon Sullivan said.
"Recently-produced errors like this are in demand, as they are much more scarce than most similar errors from 20 to 30 years ago,” Mr. Sullivan added.
HOW TO SPOT THE ERROR
Coin enthusiast and TikToker Eric Miller recently said in a video that spotting the error is simple.
All you need to do is look "for a quarter that is smaller than usual."
Because of its smaller size, details of the coin will likely be off-center or completely missing.
In this case, the LIBERTY at the top of the coin is missing details and on its reverse most of the QUARTER DOLLAR is completely cut off.
Additionally, the weight of the coin will be different.
Regular Dr. Sally Ride quarters from 2022 will weigh about 5.7 grams.
Meanwhile, the error should weigh closer to five grams as it's been minted on a nickel.
DR. SALLY RIDE COIN
The quarter was issued in 2022, and was released as part of the inaugural year of the American Women Quarters Program by the U.S. Mint.
Dr. Sally Ride was a noted physicist, astronaut, educator, and the first American woman in space.
The coin was alongside Maya Angelou, Wilma Mankiller, Nina Otero-Warren, and Anna May Wong.
A COIN'S WORTH
As mentioned, coin experts determine a coin's value based on a variety of factors.
This includes things like mintage, errors, demand, age, design, and condition.
They are also graded on a rigid scale, another reason why collectors pay top dollar.
There are five main components when it comes to a grading scale including strike, surface preservation, luster, coloration, and eye appeal.
Coins are assigned a whole number between 1 and 70, with 70 being a flawless coin.
