Will 2024 be a hot, muggy summer in New York? What meteorologists predict (2024)

Summer is on people's minds. Sunny, warm days, outdoor activities and the end of the school year are in sight, with the summer solstice less than two months away on Thursday, June 20.

Last summer was one of the rainiest the mid-Hudson has seen in a long time. Will the region see more dry days in 2024?

According to Tom Kines, senior meteorologist for AccuWeather, "It looks like it's certainly going to be a different summer than last summer."

What will summer weather look like in the mid-Hudson Valley?

In 2023, Kines said temperatures were a bit below normal in the June, July and August timeframe. This summer he said they're expecting the opposite, with temperatures predicted to be slightly above normal, and rainfall below normal.

Neil Stuart, meteorologist for the National Weather Service Office of Albany, also said seasonal temperatures for June and July are expected to be above normal, based on the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center.

"With temperatures looking to be above normal, if you've got a neighbor with a pool, you might want to be extra friendly," Kines said.

He also noted this isn't to say there won't be any rainy or cooler days, but as of now, it seems the warmer and dry days will outnumber the others.

Stuart said to expect normal chances of precipitation for June and July.

Farther north, Kines said they're concerned it may be an exceptionally dry season, something to keep in mind if you're planning a trip to the Adirondacks or north toward Canada this summer. "Enough so that you'd have to worry about the lack of rainfall," he said.

Both Kines and Stuart note these predictions are subject to change, but they can give some insight as to what you can expect.

A different take on this summer's weather, one more like last summer

According to the Farmer's Almanac summer weather forecast for 2024, the Northeast is in for a "sultry, soggy" summer. They predict most states east of the Mississippi will have a warm, hot and muggy season.

In June, the almanac suggests most parts of the country will be warm, but also humid and riddled with thunderstorms.

However, they also state temperatures are on the rise for this summer, and could be the hottest in recorded history. The Southeast states and Mid-Atlantic region "won’t escape from summer’s soaking showers and steamy days," the almanac's forecast said.

For later in the summer, in August and September, they predict the weather to be especially rainy for the eastern two-thirds of the country.
