In fact, they will often frequent places where they know they're welcome. And some wild birds, including the friendly American Robin, pay close attention to your schedule of filling up feeders and refreshing your birdbath.

Generally speaking, birds hate strong smells, shiny objects, and predators, such as birds of prey and larger animals or humans.

To cut to the chase, local birds do not become dependent on feeders. One should not worry about a feeder becoming empty when high winds of a blizzard blow your feeder to the ground or when birds deplete the food while you are away. We do know that feeding the birds increases winter survivorship.

That means the humans become their primary source provider. If the humans suddenly stop feeding them, they could very easily starve to death before they even realize the food supply has disappeared and they must now revert back to their wild ways for survival.

They eat what they need. That means they'll forage around for food in the wild. They'll also come to your feeders and pick up what they need. They're not going to overeat.

With that said, birds remember human kindness and learn to associate you with it, and they don't forget reliable food and water sources. So, if you are regularly filling your feeders and baths, the birds will use them and learn that you are the one providing them with the food when they see you doing so.
