Why You Shouldn't Keep Your Wallet In Your Back Pocket (2024)

Why You Shouldn't Keep Your Wallet In Your Back Pocket (1)We know, guys – your back pocket is your go-to place for your wallet, billfold or maybe even car keys. While having a wallet full of cash may mean great things for your social life, it could cause major problems for your health. Sitting on your wallet can cause serious pain in your back, hip and even leg.

The problem is twofold: Not only does sitting with a wallet in your pocket pinch your sciatic nerve, it also causes your pelvis and spine to position in a way that isn’t straight or natural. Think about how it would be to walk while only wearing one shoe. Sitting with a wallet on one side does the same thing to throw off your alignment. The bigger your wallet, the bigger the problem.

We wish we could tell you that putting your wallet in your pants pocket in the front would solve the problem. Unfortunately, that is not the case. A front pocket placement could cause a pinch between your thigh and torso, resulting in different aches and pains.

While it may seem like we’re the bearers of bad news, there is something you can do. We’re not telling you to take up carrying a fanny pack, strap your wallet to your chest or hide your money in your shoe (please don’t do that). Instead, just take your wallet out of your pocket when you sit, especially before you drive.

Dr. Brad Adams, D.A.C.O., lives by what he calls the “15-minute rule” – if you’re going to be sitting for 15 minutes or less, don’t worry too much about your wallet in your back pocket. If that time exceeds 15 minutes, however, switch that wallet into your shirt pocket or into your center console. You might find that those mysterious aches and pains (you know – the “gosh, am I getting old?” pains) you’ve been feeling go away.
