Why is the RTX 2080ti so expensive? (2024)

I just bought a 1080ti Asus Strix on Craigslist for $400.

Now I know this isn't the fastest card on the block anymore, but why would someone want to spend in some cases over $1,000 more on a GPU that only delivers ~30% higher frame rates and Ray Tracing?

Am I missing something?

Tensor cores, Ray Tracing, and the current top of the line. The 1080ti was $800+ when it was released, and quickly went over $1000. Comparing new versus old doesn’t really work, since old is “very” old at this point, and the new is still dominating the market until the next new is released.

Spending over $1200 on a 2080ti is just going for the best PCB. The card in the $1000-1200 price range are fully capable, and that is brand new prices instead of a 2-3 year old card.

It’s about having the best and really ray tracing is looking more and more important to have in a graphics card.

Fair enough, thank you. I haven't really been a "gamer" for a while, so I basically missed the RTX release entirely.

I purchased two of the 20 series cards used, and never even booted them into a game once. I wish I would have given them a try before I left home just to see how they played.

Machine learning and AI programming done on RTX cards have been shown to produce outputs in half the time apples to apples (2080 Ti vs 1080 Ti) that’s one of my reasons on top of all the gaming perks and general tech enthusiasm.

Smart decision I bought before one year GTX1080Ti Poseidon for arround 560-570$.
But that was immediately when RTX2080Ti show up. I had chance to buy RTX2080 for 900 euro or GTX1080Ti for close to 550 euro.
I couldn't pay same performance 350 euro more. That was more then newest and best 1TB M.2 NVMe.
GTX1080Ti worth about 900 euro in my region in moment when RTX2080Ti show up... RTX2080Ti worth 1400 euro.

But before gamers figure out how much money they need to pay to switch from GTX1080Ti to RTX2080/RTX2080Ti many second hand Pascal's are sold for very good price.
They usually asked 600-650 euro... they couldn't get so much and price of non reference, overlocked GTX1080Ti drop to 450-500 euro. Smart people bought them with 1-1.5 years warranty.
Mine had 22 months warranty. Later customers understand that not worth so small improvement and you couldn't find any more good GTX1080 for 300-350 and GTX1080Ti for 450-500 euro.
And now in my region is very hard to find Pascal second hand in good condition for price they worth. Because their performance are so close to RTX cards and price is far lower for second hand models.
Yes you can say RTX2080Ti result is much better, but that's not 200-250 more expensive card, you need to pay over 500. People payed less for 70% improvement in previous generations.

Now when Amper show up that situation for people with GTX10XX series will be better, improvement will be significant from Pascal to Amper.
RTX series somehow suddenly show up.

This is mine GTX1080Ti.





Its very good card. Only GTX1080Ti model I like more then Poseidon is GTX1080Ti K|NGP|N.
I would change mine GPU for GTX1080Ti K|NGP|N with waterblock instantly or without waterblock but with 100% chance to find him on market.
Not to wait if show up.

I have a huge theory that due to the RTX being so fast it "spoofed" my computer and it doesn't run the same anymore, a lot of times it has caused my PC to crash intermittently now. While I can't believe it myself, the only other option would be that it's starting to slowly die.

The $699 1080 Ti FE vs the $1199 2080 Ti FE is a good comparison point since both were released by Nvidia directly, and you are asking why they are so expensive. It's the cost of the new tech being passed on (tensor core and raytracing, plus their DLSS development that (I believe) requires Nvidia to do the processing first to later be made available to game devs/players), plus the lack of real competition - which I ardently hope Intel and AMD will get back to competing with them soon to bring prices down.

Also, we lucked out with the 1080 Ti because Nvidia blinked (a figure of speech) when AMD said that they had a gaming card coming out the Nvidia calculated to be better than the 1080. Had that not happened, Nvidia would have likely not released the 1080 Ti since the 1080 Ti is essentially a higher clocked Titan (Pascal) - same cuda cores, but higher clocked, and higher clocked VRAM (1GB less to differentiate). They had to release the Titan Xp which, if I recall correctly, was the actual full die for this series.

It's honestly the only card that was enough to run most games closer to the 140FPS range to keep things smooth on my 1440p monitor. The GTX 1080Ti wouldn't cut it, needed the extra performance. Also, the RTX 2000 series cards have the new GDDR6 memory that is much faster... Every RTX card i've had so far can do +1000MHz on the memory. My founders RTX 2080Ti does +1180MHz on the memory... didn't get so lucky on the GPU though, it caps out around +140MHz OC.

Ray Tracing is certainly a huge factor that will become more and more important as next gen consoles start to set the baseline for next gen PC game requirements. It's also faster than a 1080 Ti of course DLSS is another huge feature that does not get enough credit IMO. DLSS 2.0 is seriously a game changer.

The 1080ti was $699 MSRP for all base models to include the founders and the 2080ti base models was $999 MSRP, with the founders cooler costing $1199 having a different core compared to the actual base models.

Pascal has far fewer technological advances over Turing. The $300 base MSRP difference doesn’t sound terrible, but $500 for the founders with a different core does sound terrible.

the 3080ti sounds like a release around august 2020 ? or thereabouts. but yeah, 2080ti is over high priced; but king of the hill and it came out back Fall 2018! haha. yeah, tons of great deals on Pascal 1080ti and the like for just as good performance. Ray tracing is great and all but not enough games utilize it yet. I'm waiting to upgrade to a 3080ti or whatever its called later this year.

Also be aware the 1080 Ti has a die size of471mm2, while the 2080 Ti is a whopping 754mm2. It's the biggest consumer chip NVIDIA has ever made.

I would also hope AMD can come out with a great graphics card to drive prices down as NVIDIA has to fight for market share but part of that is AMD has to have a great graphics card and be willing to fight a price war with it. Luckily I can't see AMD coming out with something and pricing it higher.

I would also hope AMD can come out with a great graphics card to drive prices down as NVIDIA has to fight for market share but part of that is AMD has to have a great graphics card and be willing to fight a price war with it. Luckily I can't see AMD coming out with something and pricing it higher.

I know that the 5700xt isn't by any means a heavy hitter, but I think that AMD hit the sweet spot with price/performance with that card. If they can come out with a juggernaut card that delivers the same price/performance on the high end side, this would make the green team consumers the biggest winners

Just note, the assumed launch of the RTX 3000 series cards this year is banking on the part that this whole thing with the virus is nearly done by Q3 of this year and that is not realistic. Honestly, I don't see any large releases on video cards this year and if it's done, it won't be at an event. The best I expect is Q2 2021 for Nvidia and Q3 2021 for AMD. Don't forget, the platform for all of this information is 100% speculation right now... We have not even seen a hint of a real leak on any of this hardware and that usually sneaks out about 4-6 months before the announcement.

The outbreak hasn't affected TSMC's operations. So much of TSMC's production has already been allotted and there's so little spare that I doubt any of these companies are going to cancel or delay orders. They will take their chips, and maybe delay long enough to have genuine hard launches, but I would be surprised if NVIDIA decided to bank all those chips for months on end. I guarantee you NVIDIA, AMD, or even Apple are not going to give up their places in line for leading node orders.

That's expecting no one realizes this whole outbreak came from China and people don't start to boycott them as a global movement to let them know the actions taken for this whole situation was not okay. People are still in a haze trying to figure out the new social norm... While places like Wuhan, China are trying to convince the people this whole thing came from the USA. No one knows how this is going to pan out, but i'm convinced we have not seen the worst of it yet.

I went from a 980TI to a 2080TI and what a world of difference. Now, most of my games are pegged at 120+FPS @ 1440P with plenty of room to spare. I was on the fence about a 2080TI vs a 1080TI for a good while, but I don't regret my decision honestly. No doubt the new 3000 series will be insane, but I'm still not in a big rush to jump to 4k gaming just yet. Hopefully by the time that becomes easily doable, 4k 120hz OLEDs may be a little less expensive (not that they haven't gone down a lot in the last year or so!)

I have to say, my LG C8's picture has made me just hate my monitors :( but the higher refresh on the monitors is certainly nice. Hopefully I can pick up a CX in a few months and the new Nvidia cards will be sporting HDMI 2.1. That will be a whole new ball game there and when I'll really care about 4k gaming (trying to make the move to my living room for gaming honestly.)

I went from a 970 to a 2080Ti, that was a huge leap for me. I got a new 1440p 165Hz monitor and needed the extra power. I don't regret my purchase either. I haven't bought a top of the line GPU since the 280 and went all out this time.

I have a LG C8 and it did the same for me. LCDs just don't look the same anymore. I love the 165Hz G-Sync of my monitor though.
