Spoilers for God of War Ragnarok ahead.God of War Ragnarok boasts an all-encompassing story that wraps up many of the character’s arcs from the 2018 game, bringing an end to the Norse saga. While Kratos and Atreus shared much of the spotlight, the cast of supporting characters - from returning friends like Brok and Sindri to new allies like Angrboda and Thrud - offer a deeper insight into Norse Mythology while remaining true to the God of War mythos. One of God of War Ragnarok's most surprising scenes that changes the course of future games is the death of Brok at the hands of Odin.
Brok and Sindri were some of the first people to help Kratos and Atreus in 2018’s God of War, and the bond these brothers share with the father and son grows by the second game. When Brok sees through Odin’s disguise as Tyr, he ultimately pays the price and sets Sindri on a path of revenge. Sindri pushes all the blame toward Atreus, who brought Tyr back in the first place, but seeing Mimir completely fooled by Odin’s tricks again is equally surprising.

Mimir Wants to Believe God of War's World Can Get Better
Mimir is often stated to be the smartest person in the world, possessing knowledge about the gods, giants, historical events, and even information from different lands like Greece. While this makes it difficult to understand how he did not see through Odin’s disguise, Mimir may have just blindly hoped that his old friend Tyr was alive and could help the world. Throughout God of War Ragnarok, Mimir mentions the respect and friendship he shared with Tyr, and this could have clouded his judgment.
Another reason why Mimir could have been fooled is that Odin’s magic may be harder for him to see through. In 2018’s God of War, Mimir showed that he has noticeable gaps in knowledge especially when it came to Odin and Asgard, as he was unable to give Kratos vital information about the All-Father's plans. This was caused by a curse placed upon Mimir, so something similar may have stopped him from seeing through Odin’s plans and knowing that his friend is not the one they freed from prison.
Brok Never Trusted Aesir Gods
While Mimir and the rest of the group were completely fooled by Odin, Brok never trusted Tyr. Every decision, favor, or piece of advice that Tyr gave to Kratos and Atreus was immediately questioned by Brok. He may not have known that Tyr was actually Odin in disguise, but he definitely suspected that the person in this house was not the God of War. One of the first moments of suspicion arose when Tyr took over cooking duties from Brok.
Ultimately, Brok’s curious nature and lack of respect for those he does not know or trust allowed him to ask the right questions, leading to the revelation that Tyr was not really among them. Brok questioned everything Tyr did or said, and when the God of War mentioned a path to Asgard, Brok understood that Tyr wasn't really all he claimed to be. Once Brok made everyone around him similarly doubt the disguise, this forced Odin’s hands and led to the All-Father killing the dwarf before making his escape.
While the reasons why Mimir was fooled were never truly revealed, it was Brok’s desire to protect his friends and his general distrust toward newcomers that led to the unraveling of Odin’s plan. Replaying God of War Ragnarok highlights a lot of the things that Brok initially questioned, emphasizing Mimir’s shortcomings in this matter. Ultimately, the dwarf who previously stumped Mimir with a riddle proved to be the only person capable of seeing through Odin’s tricks, saving the group from walking straight into an ambush.
God of War Ragnarok is available now for PS4 and PS5.
