Why can’t I use duct tape to ship out packages? - Tape University® (2024)

When shipping out packages, it might seem like an obvious choice to use duct tape to seal it.

Duct tape is a strong, versatile tape with a number of different uses. However, in reality, it’s not a good idea for a number of reasons — instead, you should use packaging tape.

Carriers will reject duct tape sealed packages

Why is this so important? It’s simple: duct tape simply doesn’t provide a sufficiently strong seal. It doesn’t adhere well to the cardboard material most packages use and has a tendency to “unstick”. This means that the contents of your packages could be exposed, allowing items to be misplaced or damaged. Shipping companies typically reject parcels sealed with duct tape, and UPS notes they can and will deny damage claims if a duct-taped package slips through.

Use packaging tape instead

Secondly, there are a wide variety of packaging tapes that are perfect for a variety of situations.

  • HP 100 and HP 200 Packaging Tapes provide great balance and value
  • HP 400 and HP 500 provide ideal solutions for e-commerce or single-parcel shipments
  • HP 800 is perfect for valuables and computer equipment.
