Piping hot, cheesy, super easy to eat, and loaded with delicious toppings… there’s a reason why pizza is one of the most popular foods across the planet.
But which country eats the most pizza?
There’s no need to get competitive… after all, there are enough pizzas sold every year to go ‘round the world more than 200 times! But here at Domino’s, we’re just as curious as you are to find out who eats the most pizza.
Here in the UK, we certainly get through a lot of pizza. 49% of people living in Oxford love to tuck into a cheesy slice or two every week, and the rest of us Brits usually enjoy a lovely, piping hot pizza once every 10 days. But does that mean we’re the most avid pizza eaters on the planet?
Well, you’ll have to find out, won’t you? Keep reading to find out which countries eat the most pizza across the world.
1. Norway
Norway’s already famous for being one of the happiest places to live on the planet… do you think the reason for that might just be because there’s so much pizza around?
While there are statistically more pizzas sold in other areas in the world, Norwegians can be proud that they eat the most pizza on a per-person basis.
There’s around 5.5 million people living in Norway and the average Norwegian gets through 5kg of pizza every year!
2. USA
After 1905 saw the USA’s first pizzeria open for business, pizza began to gain popularity across the globe due to the booming fast food industry in America.
Nowadays, out of the 5 billion pizzas sold every year across the world, more than half of these are sold in the USA. So we’re sure it’s no surprise that the USA is 2nd on the list of countries that eat the most pizza.
Whether it’s a pizza delivery, frozen pizza, or make-it-at-home pizza, Americans get through a whopping 350 slices every second of the day!
3. United Kingdom
Did you know that the average Brit will chow down a whopping 731 pizzas in their lifetime?
Despite this, there are more than 66 million people living in the UK, so on a pizza-per-person ratio, this is isn’t quite enough to overtake the USA and Norway in the rankings of countries that eat the most pizza.
Oh well, we Brits can’t win at everything. Tell you what, why not order a Domino’s pizza now to put us ahead in next year’s rankings?
4. Germany
In Germany, 100 slices of pizzas are eaten every second, with canned tuna being one of the most popular pizza toppings in the country.
You also won’t be hard pressed to find a great tasting beer in Germany, as many of the world’s most famous beer brands were invented here, from Beck’s to Krombacher.
Seeing as pizza and an ice-cold beer are so delicious together, we’re not at all surprised to see Germany take 4th place of countries that eat the most pizza in the world.
5. Italy
As well as inventing the original recipe of pizza, Italians can be proud to have made it into the top five countries that eat the most of it. Around 1.6 billion pizzas are eaten in Italy every year!
Pizza wasn’t always a national treasure, though. In the 1800’s, pizza was looked down on by large chunks of society as a dish for peasants. This all changed in the end of the century, when Queen Margherita of Italy asked a Naples pizza chef to cook her up some local specialities.
The Queen in particular fell in love with the pizza topped with mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil – partly because the green, white, and red colours correlated with the Italian flag! She loved it so much that they named it ‘Pizza Margherita’ after her!
Well, there we have it – the top five countries in the world that eat the most pizza. Did any of the countries on the list surprise you?
