What’s Inside a Credit Card? Chips, Antennas & More (2024)

Inside of a credit card, there is an EMV chip with 8 contact pins that facilitates EMV transactions, which are safer than “swiped” payments. If your credit card is contactless-enabled, there is also a tiny RFID chip and a long, winding antenna inside the card, which allow for contactless payments via RFID technology. Typically, all of these elements are encased between 2 sheets of plastic – technically, polyvinyl chloride acetate (PVCA) – that are laminated together.

What you won’t find inside of a credit card is a power source, even though most credit cards issued in the present day have EMV chips embedded in them and increasingly come with contactless payment capabilities. Instead, the chip and antenna are powered by chip-enabled or contactless-enabled payment terminals when you check out at a store, for example. In other words, your credit card is not electrified when it’s sitting in your wallet. Rather, it’s dormant until you insert it or “tap” it on a chip-enabled payment terminal. Of course, magnetic stripe (“swipe”) payments are also still accepted at terminals that aren’t EMV-enabled, and you can still type in your credit card information to pay for something online.

Ultimately, credit cards are made to be durable. They go through a lot in the average day, after all. So, unless you’re intentionally peeling the two layers of PVCA apart, or you use your credit card so much that it’s falling apart, you may never see what’s inside your credit card. Just know that the EMV chip – and, if your card has the sideways Wi-Fi symbol on it, the contactless antenna – are quietly working every day to make your transactions safer.
