The Federal Government has long recognized the important role of the public in developing effective policies. Advisory committees are a way of ensuring public and expert involvement and advice in Federal decision-making.

An advisory committee, often referred to as an advisory board, is a group of individuals with unique skills, backgrounds, and expertise that augment that of the organization's board of directors.

In short, an advisory board is a body that provides strategic advice to the management of a corporation or organisation. Unlike a board of directors, advisory boards do not have a binding decision-making authority but play a vital role in offering guidance and expert insights.

Essentially, an advisory council provides advice, but doesn't engage in decision-making. Organizations strive to create a diverse board with skilled members, but most boards inevitably require guidance from expert outsiders who possess unique skills.

It provides a forum for communication/exchange of ideas, information, and concerns among students. One key responsibility of SAC is to ensure students participate in district/college governance, and that students have a voice in the development of policies and processes that have a significant effect on students.

Fundamentally, the CAB is the primary vehicle through which the community shares local knowledge and lived experience, ensuring the work is guided by a robust understanding of the community and by relevant data that can lead to more effective research, programming, and policymaking.

Roles & Responsibilities

Monitor the report of the DAB and progress of the program. Develop and recommend new or revised goals and objectives of the program. Review and analyses on the gap between curriculum and Industry requirement and gives necessary feedback or advice actions. Monitoring of Course plan and delivery.

What is the structure of the advisory committee? ›

An advisory committee, in a community context, is a structure often formal but non-decision- making in which the mandate consists of giving advice, of formulating opinions, or of making recommendations on questions where the topic affects the community. In general, advisory committee members are volunteers.

If you appoint enough advisors to constitute an advisory board, we generally recommend that it not exceed five to eight members.

They are responsible for oversight of project implementation and have the authority to hire and manage a project director, as well as to fire them. Advisory committee members may not manage daily activities, but their role is similar to a board in many respects and they are contractually obligated to fill this role.

The amount of time they contribute is often quite limited, and they aren't generally tasked with a specific project or deliverable like a consultant would be. Most companies don't compensate the members of the advisory board with any cash compensation.
