I'm not sure that I totally agree that sellers need feedback and buyers don't. Basically, feedback is nothing more than a testimonial. While I agree that sellers benefit from receiving positive feedback, it is not the end of the world if none is left. However, in the case of buyers, they can receive nothing but positive feedback so it becomes pretty much a useless thing. Sort of like a vestigial organ no longer needed but still hanging around. Basically, buyers that demand feedback from a seller are merely wanting an atta boy pat on the back, but for some the psychological need for it is great.
One thing that feedback does is allow sellers to view the feedback left for sellers by a particular buyer. While just one or two negs may truly be deserved by the seller to whom it was given, a pattern indicating a particular buyer's tendency to be hard to please often will emerge. This is useful to sellers.
Another thing useful to sellers is a buyer's bid retraction record. I think my opinions of retractions is pretty well known on the boards so I won't bother to reiterate them here. Suffice it to say, that it is useful to a seller to be able to recognize bidders prone to retracting.
