An SSSS code on a boarding pass stands for “Secondary Security Screening Selection.” While somewhat of an annoyance, this code only means you have been flagged to undergo additional security screening procedures. The most important thing this code should indicate to you is that you’ll need to prepare for an additional step in the airport security and boarding process.

What Does SSSS Stand For?

The “SSSS” you may see on an airline boarding pass is short for “Secondary Security Screening Selection.” If you see this on your boarding pass it means you will be subjected to additional security screening processes. These additional screening processes may include a pat-down, swabbing for explosives and a luggage inspection.

Why Did I Get SSSS on My Boarding Pass?

An SSSS code on your boarding pass might happen for a few specific reasons but it can also be the result of a completely random assignment. However, many of the main reasons someone is flagged for an additional screening may be connected to being a suspected security risk.

One way the TSA selects for additional screening is based on watchlists. The Selectee List, for example, is a database of passengers maintained by the TSA. If you are on the Selectee List you will automatically be chosen for additional screening each time you fly. Being on one of these lists or even if you share the same name with someone on one of these lists means you are likely to receive a SSSS on your boarding pass. A few other reasons SSSS could show up on your boarding pass include activities like buying a last-minute ticket or paying cash. Additionally, if you recently visited countries the State Department deems “high risk,” that may get you the SSSS.

Is SSSS Permanent?

Not necessarily. You may have received the SSSS randomly or due to your name being in a specific database. You may not know if you’re on the Selectee List, and there is no way to verify if your name is on it. The government will not confirm or deny names due to security concerns. But if the code pops up, don’t fret. Since SSSS codes can also be issued at random, there’s a chance the code will not continue to show up on your future boarding passes. This doesn’t mean you won’t be selected for additional security screening ever again on future flights but it probably won’t happen all too often.

What Happens When I Get SSSS on My Boarding Pass?

If you see the SSSS code on your boarding pass it means you have been selected for extra security screenings, which may take additional time. Most likely, you will go through a metal detector, receive a pat-down and have your hands and luggage swabbed to test for explosives.

After completing these additional security screening measures, a TSA agent will fill out paperwork and should stamp your boarding pass to indicate that you have been appropriately screened. If you do not receive the stamp, you may run into additional delays while trying to board at the gate.

If you feel you wrongly received or were negatively impacted by the additional screening, the DHS created a Traveler Redress Inquiry Program for travelers with security and inspection difficulties. You can put forth a case through the program’s website. There’s no guarantee anything will change, but it could clear up a potential issue and prevent future SSSS markers from appearing on your boarding pass.

Bottom Line

The SSSS on your boarding pass stands for secondary security screening selection. If this code is on your boarding pass you can expect that your trip through TSA security will take extra time, as you’ll be walked through additional security screening procedures, which may include a full-body pat-down and more thorough luggage search. For future flights, we’d recommend adding a cushion of time in case you get the SSSS again. But the good news is the four letters shouldn’t prevent you from catching your flight.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is SSSS on a boarding pass random?

Some instances of SSSS screenings are random, while some are because of perceived security risks. This can even include matching with a name on a watchlist.

How do I know if I have SSSS on my boarding pass?

If you have been flagged for additional security screenings you will see the “SSSS” code printed on your boarding pass. You also may not be able to check in online or at a self-check-in kiosk at the airport. While this may not necessarily mean you have been flagged for SSSS, you will likely need to check in with an attendant to receive your boarding pass.

Is SSSS permanent?

Not necessarily. If you receive SSSS because you are on the Selectee List, you will continue to have to submit to extra security screenings as long as you remain on the list. If the status was chosen randomly, however, there’s a chance you will never be selected again.

Does TSA PreCheck or Global Entry help prevent SSSS on a boarding pass?

No. Programs that normally expedite passage through security checkpoints such as TSA PreCheck or Global Entry do not prevent an SSSS code from appearing on a boarding pass. The SSSS code overrides these programs.

Will I be required to undergo additional screening if my flight has a connection?

Possibly. If your connection requires you to re-screen at a screening checkpoint, such as following clearance of customs after entry to the U.S., you’ll be required to undergo any required additional screening if your boarding pass indicates the SSSS code.

What do I do if I think I’m on a watchlist?

Those who’ve found themselves dealing with watchlist issues, denied boarding or “unfairly or incorrectly delayed” should access the DHS Traveler Redress Inquiry Program (DHS TRIP) and apply for redress.
