I was asked about "tactical pens" and if they were worth having? The picture is a Smith & Wesson tactical pen and a plastic disposable pen for comparison.Well the answer I guess as in so many things is not black and white. 𝘉𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘐 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘢𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘷𝘢𝘳𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘳 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘢 𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘢𝘴 𝘧𝘢𝘳 𝘢𝘴 𝘐 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘧𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨.What do you want the pen for ?Why are you considering a "tactical pen" ?What country do you live in ?A quick search on the web will give you a range of pens described as tactical pens. From the quick search I did, the prices ranged from £12 to £168.Now for a quick description for those who have no idea what a tactical pen is. Please bear in mind that with a price range as above the principles are the same but the quality should, I hope, be very different.*Most are made of some kind of metal and wont break easily.*Many are made by knife and firearm companies although this is often under licence and not actually in their factories. Names include Boker, Spyderco, Uzi, Smith & Wesson and Benchmade. *Most have a point at one end marked as a glass breakerFor self defence or fighting their use is questionable. If you have the skill to effectively use a tactical pen in a fight you can probably also use a Bic or pencil. As for the legal side in the UK I am not sure and couldn't find any case law, but as with anything, use of a tactical pen could be seen by the boys in blue as you going out prepared and armed. So in summary for me I wouldn't suggest you rush out and buy one but on the other hand I do like mine, which was given as a present so I don't know the price. However that's because generally I love the textured body of the pen and its almost indestructible. Now for someone who has ruined more trousers than I care to mention by sitting down and breaking a pen in their pocket and getting covered in ink that makes the pen worthwhile. For self defence not so much.#tactical #security #training #pen

Tony Willis MSc MBA MSyI FCMI This rears its head on many an occasion. After teaching the Kubo, and not on a bunch of keys 🙄 .. for over 30 years. Theres a couple of points here.So as stated in the prevention of crime act 1953 a person is guilty of an offence ...blah. have with them public place etc . any article made intended , adapted to cause injury. Without lawful authority or reasonable excuse. Suffice to say it's an off weap in the UK.. now If that's the case carry a genuine kubo far more effective less likely to distort, break or slide due to blood sweat fluids etc when using takedowns . Now we come to the second point .after training and teaching the Kubo for over 30 years to me it's instinctive . I know just how effective and dangerous it is in the right hands . However if you really are not an expert in its use I will guarantee it will go to sh*t very quickly , stance positioning and an ability to apply techniques using a multidimensional approach incorporating other factors. movementof.principle. ,drawing a firearm extending the target for kicks. Etc or drawing close face grabs etc are all aspects of use . The moral of the story is unless you really know your sh*t stay away from all of it ..All my best A

I like the blue one. It resembles a kubotan and I am sure could be used as one. Being a ‘boy in blue’ I also religiously carry a pocket knife. I use it as a tool, not a weapon. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Basically, as with any tool or item, they usually become illegal when used to inflict pain or injury upon another. These days, in my opinion and experience, pepper spray is the best aid in a matter of self defense. It requires minimal skill, can incapacitate numerous assailants at once and dissipates in a short period of time. Thanks for sharing! Stay safe

Tactical pens are not considered weapons but are designed to provide a means of self-defence and emergency assistance when needed. They are often favoured by individuals who want a discreet and versatile tool that can be carried in everyday settings without drawing attention. However, like you correctly pointed out, it can be dangerous and self-incriminatory if it is not permitted by law. The TSA specifically forbids tactical pens. They can confiscate any weapon and since a tactical pen might look like one, it may draw unwanted attention.

Yes a "tactical pen" has strength and penetration advantages over a plastic option. There is a risk of it being confiscated then a cost to replace it. Additional to this you have just lost a tool option in your defence strategy. Understanding the principles of the tool is critical. A handheld striking tool is a force multiplier. It transfers focused kinetic energy to a target to cause pain. It is used because of its enhanced capabilities over our hands. In NZ Crimes Act 1961 definition of offensive weapon meansany article made or altered for use for causing bodily injury, or intended by the person having it with him or her for such use. So tac-pens can fall into this category and are often seized by airport security. A cheap $1 plastic pen is an effective and disposable, easily reaplaced option that may reduce your probability of legal issues. So long as your intent is to carry for writing purposes.

Unless someone has extensive training and regular practice, a “tactical pen” (even one that costs $100USD) is just the one you can get out of your pocket the fastest to sign the credit card receipt at dinner.

As with any tool, training and mental preparation for conflict would be a prerequisite for it to be of true value. Time and effort are usually better spent on developing situational awareness and the confidence to swiftly take action to get away from problems before they become unavoidable

Its difficult in today's world to identify why an organization, an individual or even a country may become targets for cyber or physical attacks or whether they may come to the attention of various types of activists or activist organisations. It can be something as simple as who supplied your funding, who your shareholders are, your social media posts, an individual within the organisation. The threat of radicalisation of staff and that needn't be to an extreme level leading to forms of inside a risk is one that very few organisations are currently considering. I'm getting asked to talk more and more at conferences about staff radicalisation. I think it's going to rapidly become an issue. We've all seen in recent months, maybe years, but definitely in recent months, a large number of protests, demonstrations, and events, either on things like Palestine, immigration, environmental issues. What we've seen is clips being posted either on the news or in the press or on social, people being identified, taken with a comment, who is this person and where do they work. Very rapidly that gets answered sometimes correctly, sometimes incorrectly. And that can lead to a huge pile on, on both the individual and the organisation. It exposes both to, both to the potential of both cyber attacks, social media type attacks, and in person physical attacks. So it could mean someone turns up at your organisation, as soon as they see someone walk out of your building with that lanyard on, they can become a victim and you're going to see more and more and more of that, I think happen over a short period of time.If you would like to know more then join my next webinar on Tuesday#risk #hr #training
