If your computer is infected by a virus or malware, you have two main options to get rid of it: using antivirus software or manual removal methods. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, depending on the type and severity of the infection, your level of technical expertise, and your personal preferences. In this article, we will compare and contrast the pros and cons of both approaches, and give you some tips on how to choose the best one for your situation.

1 Antivirus software
Antivirus software is a program that scans your computer for malicious code, such as viruses, worms, trojans, ransomware, spyware, adware and more. It can detect and remove these threats automatically or prompt you to take action and can also prevent infections from happening in the first place by blocking suspicious downloads, attachments or websites. While antivirus software is easy to use, convenient and reliable if kept updated and run regular scans, it does have some drawbacks such as slowing down computer performance, interfering with legitimate programs or applications, being expensive depending on the features and subscription plans chosen, and missing some new or sophisticated threats.

2 Manual removal methods
Manual removal methods are the alternative to using antivirus software, involving identifying and deleting malicious files, folders, registry entries, or processes that are causing the infection. This can be done with built-in tools of the operating system, such as Task Manager, File Explorer, or Registry Editor, or with specialized tools like Malwarebytes, RKill, or RogueKiller. Manual removal methods are more flexible, precise, and cost-effective than antivirus software; however, they require more time and effort, as well as technical skills to locate and identify the malicious components. Additionally, manual removal methods can be risky if you are not sure what you are doing; you may accidentally delete or modify important files or settings. Lastly, manual removal methods can be incomplete if the infection is complex or persistent; some hidden or encrypted files might be missed or the root cause of the infection may not be removed.

Everyone should have some sort of antivirus installed. This article should not be a comparison of threat removal options of Threat Detection ativirus software. This article should be about why you need to do both. As not all antivirus software is capable of removing all threats and Human error is to prevalent to think that it is adequite at preventing and eliminating threats off of a system.

Joe Fosnough is right. It is not an either/or choice. Most on-demand or as-needed antivirus wares will need to automatically make your native AV secondary or fully disabled to allow them to do their work. In some cases you may need to uninstall your main anti-malware in order to do manual scanning with other wares. However, when done with manual scanning, I make sure to check my primary antivirus to make sure it is full re-enabled and updated. No antivirus will remove everything. You need to stay alert for any changed behavior in browsing, general use, email etc. and try to be aware of incidents that may have brought on potential exposure.

3 How to choose the best method
When it comes to removing viruses or malware from your computer, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. A variety of factors should be taken into account, such as the type and severity of the infection. For instance, ransomware might encrypt your files, while rootkits might embed themselves in the core of your system. Your level of technical expertise should also be taken into consideration; if you are not confident with advanced tasks such as using command prompt or editing registry entries, you may want to use antivirus software instead. Additionally, your personal preferences should be taken into account—some people may prefer antivirus software for convenience, whereas others may opt for manual removal methods for control and customization. Ultimately, the method that best suits your needs and expectations should be chosen.

4 Tips for virus and malware removal
Regardless of which method you choose to remove viruses or malware from your computer, it's important to take certain precautions. Firstly, back up your important data before starting the process. Then, disconnect your computer from the internet and any other networks to prevent the infection from spreading. To increase your chances of detecting and removing all traces of the infection, use multiple tools or programs to scan and clean your computer. Additionally, update your operating system and applications regularly to fix any vulnerabilities or bugs that might allow infections to enter or persist on your computer. Finally, practice good online habits and security measures such as avoiding suspicious links or attachments, using strong passwords and encryption, and installing a firewall and antivirus software. This will reduce your exposure and risk of getting infected by viruses or malware in the first place.

The AV software that comes with windows is actually pretty effective, if kept up to date...and it also has a manual Full Scan you should be using, time to time.Yes, backing up your important data is very important. Also very important is keeping your backed-up data out of reach of your computer. If your computer can reach the external storage, then any good malware can too. If a crypto virus reaches your machine everything it can see will be encrypted beyond your access, permanently.Certain antivirus software can be enabled in Safe Mode and learning how to access safe mode is a good thing to learn. In safe mode only the essential parts of Windows are loaded, allowing more effective scanning to be completed. Try it with MalwareBytes.
