1 Register your IP rights

One of the first steps to use IP for branding is to register your IP rights with the relevant authorities. Depending on the type of IP you have, you may need to apply for patents, trademarks, copyrights, or design rights. These rights will give you the legal ownership and exclusive control over your IP, and prevent others from copying, using, or selling it without your permission. Registering your IP rights will also enhance your credibility and reputation as a product innovator, and attract potential investors, partners, and customers.

Intellectual property is the vital bedrock upon which iconic brands are constructed. Registering patents, trademarks, and copyrights solidifies legal ownership, elevating your brand from imitation to innovation. This fortified foundation radiates authenticity, commanding respect and inspiring allegiance from customers who crave the assurance of originality in an age of ubiquitous counterfeits.

2 Use your IP consistently

Another way to use IP for branding is to use your IP consistently across all your products, services, and marketing channels. This means applying your IP elements, such as your logo, name, slogan, color scheme, and design, in a coherent and recognizable way that reflects your brand personality and values. Using your IP consistently will help you create a distinctive and memorable brand identity that sets you apart from your competitors and builds trust and loyalty among your customers.

Wielding intellectual property with unwavering consistency is the alchemical formula for transforming branded assets into indomitable icons. A cohesive application of logos, slogans, and design motifs across products and channels distills the essence of your brand into an instantly recognizable talisman. This indelible imprint commands customer loyalty by anchoring your identity as the authentic, trustworthy North Star in a sea of forgeries.

3 Leverage your IP assets

A third way to use IP for branding is to leverage your IP assets to create new opportunities and generate more value. You can do this by licensing your IP to other parties, such as manufacturers, distributors, or retailers, who can use it to produce or sell products or services under your brand name. Licensing your IP can help you expand your market reach, increase your revenue streams, and strengthen your brand awareness. Alternatively, you can also collaborate with other product innovators who have complementary IP assets, and create joint products or services that combine the best of both brands.

4 Monitor and enforce your IP rights

A fourth way to use IP for branding is to monitor and enforce your IP rights against any infringement or misuse by others. You can do this by conducting regular searches and audits of your IP portfolio, and keeping track of any potential or actual violations of your IP rights. You can also use various tools and platforms, such as online databases, social media, and e-commerce sites, to identify and report any unauthorized or counterfeit use of your IP. By monitoring and enforcing your IP rights, you can protect your brand reputation and value, and deter any unfair competition or imitation.

Swift and resolute enforcement action against infringements becomes the unstoppable counterstrike, an exacting display of brand dominance that deters even the most brazen of counterfeiters. This impenetrable legal armor fortifies your iconic identity as the immutable authentic in a wilderness of facade.

5 Showcase your IP stories

A fifth way to use IP for branding is to showcase your IP stories to your customers and stakeholders. Your IP stories are the narratives that explain how you came up with your IP, what challenges you faced, how you solved them, and what impact you made. Your IP stories can help you demonstrate your creativity, innovation, and passion as a product innovator, and inspire your customers and stakeholders to connect with your brand on an emotional level. You can showcase your IP stories through various channels, such as your website, blog, social media, podcasts, videos, or events.

6 Learn from IP examples

A sixth way to use IP for branding is to learn from IP examples of other product innovators who have successfully used IP for branding. By studying how they have registered, used, leveraged, monitored, enforced, and showcased their IP, and what results they have achieved, you can identify their strengths and weaknesses and any gaps or opportunities for improvement. For instance, Dyson is a British company that has patented their vacuum cleaners, fans, and hair dryers, building a global brand that is synonymous with cutting-edge technology and design. Lego, a Danish company, has trademarked its name, logo, and brick shape while also licensing its IP to create various products and media franchises. Similarly, Starbucks has copyrighted its name, logo, and green color in order to create a distinctive and consistent brand experience across its coffee shops, products, and online platforms.

I can’t emphasize enough on the power of trademark! When you have a brand, not only you have to get your domain in dot com, you also need to get your social handle the same across the board. Among social handles, IG is hard to get your desired handle. So for the first 6 months, I used officialfanlovebeauty until I got my registered trademark. I then went to IG to show my IP and got awarded for my handle as they asked the other person to give it up for me!! Power of trademark!!!!
