Während ein Coin immer auf einer eigenen und unabhängigen Blockchain basiert und das native Zahlungsmittel der Blockchain ist, wird ein Token auf einer bereits bestehenden Blockchain erstellt und verwendet.
Zudem unterscheiden sich Coins und Token in ihrer Funktion. Coins sind reine Zahlungsmittel, Token können hingegen als Zahlungsmittel eingesetzt werden und viele weitere Funktionen übernehmen: Token können unter anderem einen realen Vermögenswert abbilden oder als Zugangsberechtigung dienen. Beispiel: Ein Token kann wie eine moderne Aktie fungieren. Anlegerinnen und Anleger kaufen Token, um Anteile am Krypto-Unternehmen zu erhalten und vom Unternehmensgewinn zu profitieren.
Bitcoin und Ether sind beispielsweise Coins, da sie auf ihrer eigenen Blockchain laufen. Chainlink (LINK) hingegen ist ein dezentrales Oracle-Netzwerk, das Smart Contracts auf der Ethereum-Blockchain mit realen Daten verbindet, und daher ein Token. Tether, einer der bekanntesten Stablecoins, ist ebenfalls ein Token, der auf mehreren Blockchains verwendet wird – unter anderem der von Ethereum, Avalanche und Solana.
Je nach Funktion der Token wird in vier Arten unterschieden:
Utility Token werden als Zugriffsberechtigung für Plattformen oder eine bestimmte Dienstleistung eingesetzt — ähnlich wie eine Kinokarte.
Security Token sind vergleichbar mit Wertpapieren, allerdings erwerben die Käuferinnen und Käufer keine Eigentumsrechte am Krypto-Unternehmen. Sie legen ihr Geld über den Kauf von Security Token an und erzielen durch eine positive Wertentwicklung und den anschließenden Verkauf der Token Gewinne.
Mit Equity Token können Anlegerinnen und Anleger einen Anteil am herausgebenden Unternehmen erwerben, genau wie beim Kauf von Aktien.
Jedes NFT ist einzigartig, denn es ist der Besitznachweis für immaterielle Güter, beispielsweise digitale Kunstwerke, Musik oder Eintrittskarten.
