Are potting sheds worth it? ›

Designed to enjoy an abundance of natural light, a potting shed provides the ideal temperature for growing plants, particularly those that aren't quite ready to brave the outdoors. What's more, is there a better place to keep your pots, trays, tools, soil and seeds than in the exact place where they're needed?

The main difference between a greenhouse and a potting shed is the building materials. A greenhouse is made mainly of glass or polycarbonate glazing (ie. plastic). Whereas a potting shed is usually made of timber with some glass windows, to give you some natural light in the building.

A 6′ x 8′ shed is often the perfect size for a potting shed, used for potting, transplanting and propagating your plants. If you enjoy gardening or simply need a handy space that you can get dirty and store your gardening supplies in, then a 6′ x 6′ or 6′ x 8′ she shed is definitely a good size.

A potting shed is also a structure used to store and grow plants, however, it does not have fully transparent walls and roofing, instead, just a few windows to allow some sunlight in. A potting shed is great for growing plants as well as storing equipment.

A shed will need a floor or base, depending on the type of shed and how “floor” is defined. There is the base or foundation type of floor and the floor on which you will store your items. The floor and base can be the same, or they can be two separate things. If a shed is over 300-500lbs, it should have a foundation.

While you can place your shed (with or without a floor) on bare dirt, we highly recommend first laying down a gravel pad. The gravel will add a layer of moisture protection between your new structure and the ground so that water from rain and snow won't turn your shed site into a muddy mess.
