In most cases, we're encouraged to take responsibility for our actions and not resort to blaming others. However, there are instances where it's crucial to recognize if your boss might not have your best interests at heart.

However, in certain circ*mstances, it's possible the manager you're working under truly doesn't have your ability to succeed at heart. One common way to spot this type of supervisor is by observing the way they react to mistakes. A manager who isn't motivated by the idea of their employees succeeding may respond to a mistake in an unconstructive manner, precipitating a pattern of dysfunction that can only be described as a vicious cycle.

Harvard Business School published a full breakdown of this unfortunate phenomenon, which they call the “set-up-to-fail syndrome." If you suspect that your boss may be promoting this difficult workplace dynamic, keep an eye out for these problematic behaviors. Here are the signs that your manager may be setting you up to fail.

🚩 10 Signs Your Boss Is Setting You Up to Fail

  1. Hypercritical Behavior: If your boss suddenly becomes overly critical of your mistakes, it might signal a problem.
  2. Micromanagement: Constant scrutiny and a lack of trust can hamper your performance and morale.
  3. Work Assignments Dwindle: When your boss stops assigning work, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
  4. Avoidance: If your boss avoids you unless necessary, it can lead to a silent-treatment dynamic.
  5. Refusing to Adapt: A growth mindset is vital for success; if your boss refuses to change and makes you stick to ineffective methods, that's a red flag.
  6. Resource Cutback: When you're denied the resources you need, it implies a lack of trust.
  7. Time-Consuming Tasks: Being burdened with unnecessary tasks steals your time and can hinder success.
  8. Downplaying Accomplishments: Your achievements are downplayed, leading to a lack of recognition and motivation.
  9. Communication Blockade: When your boss restricts your communication with colleagues, it's detrimental in both the short and long term.
  10. Exclusive 'Special Projects': Consistently handling projects expected to fail can damage your reputation.

🚀 What Can You Do?

If you suspect your boss is setting you up to fail, consider taking these steps:

  1. Document Everything: Keep records of your work, interactions, and any concerning behavior from your boss.
  2. Seek Feedback: Initiate conversations with your boss to understand their expectations and address concerns.
  3. Talk to HR: If the situation doesn't improve, consider discussing the issue with your HR department.
  4. Network: Connect with colleagues and mentors who can provide support and guidance.
  5. Consider Your Options: Explore other job opportunities if necessary, but make sure it's the right move for your career.

Your career growth is important, and being aware of these signs can empower you to take action. Remember, you have the ability to influence your career path!
