US CPI Rises 0.2% MoM
The CPI in the US increased 0.2% month-over-month in July 2024, rebounding from a 0.1% fall in June, and matching market expectations. Shelter prices rose 0.4%, accounting for nearly 90% of the monthly increase, following a 0.2% gain in June. The index for food increased 0.2% in July, as it did in June. Other increases were recorded in prices for motor vehicle insurance (1.2%), household furnishings and operations (0.3%), education, recreation, and personal care. Meanwhile, the energy index was unchanged, after declining in the two preceding months. Prices declined for used cars and trucks (-2.3%), medical care (-0.3%), airline fares (-1.6%) and apparel (-0.4%).

US CPI Falls for 1st Time in 4 Years
The consumer price index in the United States unexpectedly declined 0.1% month-over-month in June 2024, the first fall since May 2020, following a flat reading and compared to expectations of a 0.1% rise. The index for gasoline fell 3.8%, after declining 3.6% in May, more than offsetting an increase in shelter (0.2% vs 0.4%). Also, food prices rose 0.2%, slightly above 0.1%. Excluding food and energy, the core CPI edged up 0.1%, below 0.2% in May and forecasts of 0.2%. Cost increased for motor vehicle insurance (0.9%), household furnishings and operations (0.5%), medical care (0.2%), and personal care but fell for airline fares (-5%), used cars and trucks (-1.5%), and communication (-0.2%).
