Two reasons we need pipelines (2024)

TC Energy pipelines in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico

We are proud of our roots building the first natural gas pipelines in Canada under the TransCanada name.

Today we are TC Energy, a North American company in a global industry, operating tens of thousands of kilometres (miles) of pipelines.

Our network includes historic pipelines in Canada and Alberta, along with U.S. pipelines that have operated for over a century – thanks to plenty of maintenance, modernization and expansion along the way. We also build and operate new natural gas and oil pipelines in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, to world class safety and environmental standards.

Through our network, we ensure that energy from oil and clean-burning natural gas reaches the people who need it in their lives – millions of Canadians, Americans and Mexicans, as well as people in other nations who benefit from the energy we export.

We understand that society expects this energy to be delivered in the most sustainable way possible. That’s why we’re dedicated to doing our job safely, responsibly, collaboratively and with integrity.

This hard work and commitment sets us apart today, and we will keep operating this way for decades to come.

FAQs

Two reasons we need pipelines? ›

Pipelines transport energy safely

In the U.S., 66 per cent of crude oil and refined products are moved through pipelines, and almost all natural gas is delivered via pipeline. Pipeline transport is safer, more efficient, and creates fewer GHG emissions than ship, truck or train.

What are the two reasons we need pipelines? ›

What is the need of pipeline? ›

Pipelines are useful for transporting water for drinking or irrigation over long distances when it needs to move over hills, or where canals or channels are poor choices due to considerations of evaporation, pollution, or environmental impact. Oil pipelines are made from steel or plastic tubes which are usually buried.

What are the benefits of a pipeline? ›

Pipelines are much safer than rail or truck for transporting natural gas and petroleum products and include many innovative safety features like 24/7 computerized monitoring, sensors on automatic shut-off valves, cathodic anti-corrosion protection, and in-line inspection tools.

Why pipelines are better for the environment? ›

#Pipelines protect the environment because they emit lower GHG emissions than other ways to deliver energy. Liquids #pipelines are powered primarily by electric pumps with almost no greenhouse gas emissions of their own.

What are the 2 types of pipelines available? ›

Jenkins offers two types of syntax to create pipelines: declarative and scripted.

What are the four advantages of pipeline transportation? ›

The four advantages of pipeline transportation are: i Both solid when converted into a slurry liquid and gases can be transported through pipelines ii Initial cost of laying pipelines is high but subsequent running costs are minimal. iii Trans-shipment of losses and delays are minimized.

What is the main purpose of pipeline control? ›

Responsible for the operations and maintenance of transmission and gathering pipeline systems. A Pipeline Controller is responsible for monitoring and performing remote operations to pipelines, recognizing abnormal conditions, and taking proper actions to provide a resolution.

What are the three types of pipelines? ›

There are essentially three major types of pipelines along the transportation route: gathering systems, transmission systems, and distribution systems.

What are the benefits of the line 5 pipeline? ›

Line 5 supplies 65% of propane demand in the Upper Peninsula, and 55% of Michigan's statewide propane needs. Overall, Line 5 transports up to 540,000 barrels per day (bpd) of light crude oil, light synthetic crude, and natural gas liquids (NGLs), which are refined into propane.

Who benefits from oil pipelines? ›

Millions of homes in colder climates depend upon pipelines to keep their homes warm in winter. Home heating oil or ultra low sulfur diesel is sent by pipeline in large volumes to regional storage points. Trucks make heating fuel deliveries the last few miles of a journey started by pipeline.

Are pipelines good or bad? ›

The oil and gas industry routinely claims that pipelines are the safest, cleanest way to transport their products. And yet, pipeline leaks and spills happen all the time. And those leaks and spills tend to cause widespread harm, to the environment and to people.

Are pipelines good for the economy? ›

Particularly in the event of a prolonged Russia-Ukraine conflict, it is worth noting that every barrel of crude oil that flows through pipelines has a positive impact on the Canadian economy. In fact, in 2022, each one million barrels of crude oil that flow through the pipelines in Canada adds $23 million to GDP.

What are the effects of pipelines? ›

Pipelines can pollute air, water, soil and climate when they leak. Pipelines that cross rivers and streams are more vulnerable to breaks when heavy rain and floods occur.

What are the major advantages of pipeline transportation? ›

The four advantages of pipeline transportation are: i Both solid when converted into a slurry liquid and gases can be transported through pipelines ii Initial cost of laying pipelines is high but subsequent running costs are minimal. iii Trans-shipment of losses and delays are minimized.

What are the economic benefits of pipelines? ›

Pipelines help keep costs low for important consumer goods like gasoline, natural gas and heating oil. These lower prices provide a direct benefit not only to consumers, but also to producers, distributors and manufacturers of all sizes across the supply chain.

What are some facts about pipelines? ›

Pipelines are constructed using different types of materials based on the size, pressure requirements and use. These pipeline materials include metal, concrete and occasionally plastics. The first hydrocarbon pipelines in recorded history were in China in 500 BC and were made of bamboo. Most pipelines are underground.

Why were pipelines invented? ›
