Minecraft's Tridents are a very rare Weapon. They cannot be crafted, and are instead are a very rare drop from Drowned. Drowned have a 15% chance of spawning with a Trident in Bedrock Edition (6.25% in Java Edition), and those will themselves have an 8.5% chance of dropping their Trident as an item upon death. Tridents thrown by Drowned cannot be picked up, just like Arrows fired by Skeletons.
Tridents are unique in that they are both a melee weapon and a ranged weapon. Their normal melee swing works like a Sword, but is a tad slower (and in Java Edition has a brief pause after every swing). The ranged attack is used by holding the Use Button and flies in a ballistic arc (similar to Arrows and Snowballs), so you'll need to compensate for the drop with your aiming.
Tridents are also unique for having two exclusive and very useful Enchantments:
Loyalty will cause the Trident to return to you after it's thrown and hits something.
Riptide will propel the user a certain distance, but only if they're underwater or in the rain (it does not work during snowfall). If combined with an Elytra, it can be used to assist gliding.
This means the overall chance of obtaining a trident from any given drowned is 0.53125% (about 1 in 188) or 0.71875% (about 1 in 140) with looting III.
Under proper conditions, Channeling enchantment is one of the most overpowered enchantments. During thunderstorms, players can throw a Trident enchanted with Channeling to reign down lightning bolts on mobs. The only downside to Channeling is its reliance on thunderstorms.
Only 6.25% (or 1 in 16) drowned spawn with tridents. Of these, they have an 8.5% chance to drop their trident when killed by a player. The chance is increased by 1% for each level of looting up to a max of 11.5% with Looting III.
