Can you travel on a plane with essential oils? ›

Guidelines for flying:

Of course, you can bring whatever oils you would like in your checked luggage, but be sure to still seal them in baggies to protect against spills. Because essential oils have potent scents that may irritate others, remember not to open them while on the plane.

Essential oils can be brought in your carry on luggage provided they are stored in bottles under 100ml or 100g. This may mean transferring your own essential oil blends into smaller bottles. You also need to be able to fit all of your essential oil bottles in a transparent plastic bag and it is one per person.

Different airlines or destinations may have unique restrictions which are subject to change, but for the most part, oils can be carried as long as they fit into a single, transparent, re-sealable plastic bag which measures up to 20 x 20cm and offers a total capacity of up to one litre.

Nonflammable oils include standards motor oils used in vehicles and food oils such as olive oil and corn oil are allowed in either carry on or checked baggage. Liquids in carry-on baggage are further limited to 100-ml (3.4 oz) containers at the TSA security checkpoint.

Some travelers suggest securing bottles with bubble wrap. Others highly suggest adding an additional protective layer by wrapping each bottle in a plastic bag to prevent clothing articles from haphazard spills during the flight.

First, make sure that all of the non-essential liquids and gels that you intend to pack in your carry-on do not exceed 3.4 ounces (100 ml/g). If they do, purchase smaller sizes. Next, use a single clear, resealable 1-quart (1 L) bag to store them within your carry-on. Only one bag is allowed per person.

If you are using “diluted” essential oils, plastic containers, specifically PET or fluorinated PE or PP containers, are known to store these oil products without a problem.

Heavier essential oils, such as Vetiver, Sandalwood and Patchouli, are the slowest to oxidize and may not need refrigeration.

Some of the most commonly used carrier oils are grapeseed, jojoba, coconut and apricot kernel oils, as these oils are typically similar in structure to our skin's natural sebums and therefore absorb easily and don't cause clogged pores or breakouts.

Can essential oils be shipped by air? ›

These hazardous essential oils can be shipped in the air and outside of the United States when using specific handling guidelines, which we follow. These oils can be shipped via UPS, FedEx or DHL and may be subject to special handling and/or fees if they are in sizes of 1 oz or larger.

You can bring travel-sized essential oil diffusers like Portable Essential Oil diffuser, USB Essential Oil Diffuser, Pilot Diffuser, Reed Diffuser but you need to put them in your carry-on bag. Reminder: Don't use this type of diffuser on board.

Care should be taken with the following essential oils as they can be very irritating to the eyes, nose and throat: basil, Ceylon cinnamon, tarragon, wintergreen, clove, helichrysum, peppermint, compact oregano, mountain savory and thyme with thymol.

If you are traveling with essential oil diffusers on an airplane, you may bring essential oils in your carry-on bag. Many travelers were forced to abandon their essential oils when they reached security screening.

Lavender is something that the odor could get picked up by the closed air system - and that could cause problems, particularly for people with allergies. If you do - don't bring in carry-on, but in checked luggage.

Any perfume that meets the 3-1-1 rule can be taken on a plane. This includes eau de parfum, eau de toilette, and other fragrance types, as long as they are in a container that holds 3.4 ounces or less and fits in a quart-sized bag.
