What Are The Nasdaq Composite And Nasdaq 100 Indexes?
Founded in 1971, the Nasdaq was the first electronic exchange, allowing investors to buy and sell stocks online, rather than on a physical trading floor like the NYSE was at the time. The name stands for the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations exchange.
The Nasdaq Composite is an index comprised of around 3,000 stocks. While it features companies from all sectors, it has a tech-heavy focus.
Nasdaq stocks include each of the so-called FAANG stocks — Facebook (FB), Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL), Netflix (NFLX) and Google parent Alphabet (GOOGL).The index is also home to many leading semiconductor stocks, including Intel (INTC), AMD (AMD) and Nvidia (NVDA).
The Nasdaq 100 index is a narrower basket of stocks. It includes 100 of the largest names on the composite index based on market capitalization, excluding financial companies. Stock futures are available for both the composite and Nasdaq 100 indexes.
Nasdaq After Hours
Normal stock market trading hours on the Nasdaq and NYSE are Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. After-hours trading in the evening following the stock market close and premarket trading in the morning before the opening bell are both referred to as extended-hours trading.
To trade stocks on the NYSE and Nasdaq after hours, check with your broker to see if they offer that ability.
The advantage of trading stocks on the NYSE and Nasdaq after hours is convenience. You have longer access to the market, giving you the ability to react to breaking news, after-the-close earnings reports and other developments more quickly.
On the downside, there are risks and disadvantages. One is that there is less liquidity (i.e., trading volume) in the NYSE and Nasdaq after hours. This can lead to wider spreads between the bid and ask, and more volatility than during normal-trading hours.
