Let's face it: spending a couple hundred or even thousand dollars on new home appliances isn't the most fun thing to spend your money on. Unfortunately though, all good things must come to an end—including your extremely overworked dishwasher and overstuffed refrigerator (No? Just me?) Because of this, it's important to know what's worth the extra money to last you for years to come. When you break it down by how long they last (though sadly not forever), the cost doesn't seem like such a blow. Here's exactly how long your household appliances should last, according to Home Warranty of America (HWA).
Refrigerator And Freezer
Average lifespan: about 13 years
According to HWA, there are a few ways to maintain your refrigerator and freezer in order to help it last longer. Their tips include:1) Vacuum your refrigerator coils once a year. 2) Clean the inside regularly by scrubbing it down. 3) Ensure the door stays shut.
Stoves And Ovens
Average lifespan: about 13-15 years
While gas ranges tend to last an average of 15 years, electric ones average about 13. To maintain your stove and oven, be sure to clean them regularly.

Washer And Dryer
Average lifespan: about 10-13 years
Though washers last about 10 years, dryers typically live a solid 13 before needing to be replaced. By cleaning out lint traps every time you use the dryer and keeping the vent pipe, motor, belt, drum, and behind the dryer lint-free, HWA says you can maintain your dryer. Similarly, by checking hoses for leaks and clogs and keeping the filter clean, you can maintain your washer longer.
Dishwasher
Average lifespan: about 9 years
Unfortunately dishwashers have one of the shortest lifespans when it comes to major household appliances. To maintain your dishwasher, The Balance Everyday suggests you follow the owner's manual's recommended maintenance instructions, keep the sprayer arm nozzle unclogged, and clean the drain.
Microwave
Average lifespan: about 9 years
Like dishwashers, microwaves don't last as long as other home appliances. In order to ensure it stays cooking, Home Warranty Company suggests you keep the inside and outside clean, follow microwave instructions, and make sure door closes correctly.
