You all know I've been outspoken about the NAR's shady business practices and the corruption pushed onto Brokers by local associations and mandatory MLS memberships. The rules are all over the place, violating ethics and contradicting other organizations. While the NAR calls these requirements "optional," if you want insurance like E&O, you better comply—sounds like a protection racket, right? It sets up a cycle of corruption from those who wield the tools to the mandatory-using brokerages.
Take the rule: "If your brokerage is NAR-affiliated, all licensees must be too." That's where I draw the line. As an auctioneer, my peers and I don't need to join these associations in order to represent my clients properly. And neither do Realtors.
I end up having to pay nearly double just to cover these unnecessary fees. I have tools at auction that surpass any MLS, and they're free.
Sure, choosing to continue membership was tough, especially when the NAR was found guilty of corruption and violating the Sherman Anti-Trust Act. But this is my business, and as long as association requirements exist, I won't join those brokerages. You're not an independent contractor when you're forced to comply. Sorry NAR and lawmakers, but you're just plain wrong.
