There's a new way to train Netflix on what shows you like (2024)
Soon there will only be two ways to rate what you watch on Netflix: You either liked it or you didn't.
The streaming media service confirmed it will switch from star ratings to a simpler "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" in April. Netflix will also introduce a "percent match" score based on what content its users are watching.
Netflix users currently use a five-star system to rate movies and TV shows. Those results then help Netflix with recommendations for future programming based on what you watch and rate.
The company says after running a series of user tests, they found a 200% increase in engagement with ratings using the thumbs up/thumbs down decision.
Netflix said the move should clear up confusion about how users should apply ratings in a star-based system, which is traditionally used to indicate the quality of a TV series or movie. But not so with Netflix.
"The star ratings represented compatibility -- not quality," said Netflix in a statement. "This means that 4-5 stars indicated that based on your previous viewing habits, Netflix thought you would enjoy a specific title."
The "percent match" feature will present a percentage next to a series or film representing the chances you will enjoy watching. For example, if you see 90% next to Stranger Things, it means Netflix thinks there's a 90% chance you'll enjoy watching that program based on previous viewing habits.
We take feedback from every visit to the Netflix service (for example, what titles you start watching, if you finish those titles, and how you rate those titles, such as thumbs up) and continually update our algorithms with those signals to improve the accuracy of their prediction of what you're most likely to watch.
Resetting the app will delete any downloads saved to your device and sign you out of Netflix. Go to the home screen, then tap Settings. Scroll down and tap Netflix. Slide the Reset switch on to reset the app.

Select the setting you want to edit for that profile.
Once you've signed in, click on your Account in the upper right-hand corner. Scroll towards the bottom and click on your Profile. A drop-down will give you an option to select Viewing Activity. Once you're in Viewing Activity, click the “hide” icon to delete any show or movie affecting your recommendations.
Select Viewing restrictions. Enter your Netflix account password. Under Title Restrictions, type the name of the TV show or movie and then select the title. To remove a title from your blocked list, select the X next to the title name.
Tap on your profile icon in the upper right-hand corner. Tap on “Account.” Scroll down to “Security and Privacy” and tap on “Manage access and devices.” You will see the most recent devices active on your account.
Can the owner of the Netflix account see what you watch? The answer is yes. Everyone who has a password to a Netflix account can see all the viewed titles of all of the profiles connected to that account. By way of illustration, here are the menu choices of a profile that is not me on my Netflix account.
Netflix will have ways of knowing if you are still sharing your account with someone outside of your household. That's because the streaming service collects a lot of data about you, including what you watch, where you watch it, the location of your home, and device IDs.
Removing titles from the Continue Watching row is only available on the latest version of the Netflix app. For older app versions without this feature, you can remove titles from your Viewing activity, which also removes them from Continue Watching.
Open Viewing activity for that profile. On the Watching page, click the hide icon next to the episode or title you want to hide. If you hide an episode, you'll see the option to hide the entire series. To hide all of your viewing history, select the Hide all option at the bottom of the page and confirm.
