The Egyptian God Cards are three of the most powerful monsters to ever exist within the Yu-Gi-Oh world. Among them, the strongest of the three is The Winged Dragon of Ra. During Seto Kaiba’s Battle City tournament, Obelisk the Tormentor, Slifer the Sky Dragon, and The Winged Dragon of Ra were all trump cards used by the best Duelists the world had to offer. Such power is not easy to use however, as anyone who watched the original Yu-Gi-Oh animated series would know. The only people able to control an Egyptian God Card are those with very strong ties to Ancient Egypt. This isn’t the only protective seal around The Winged Dragon of Ra, however.

High above Battle City, in Seto Kaiba’s “Kaiba Craft 3”, the quarter-final matches of the Battle City tournament took place. Marik Ishtar, the evil tomb keeper bent on world domination (as well as revenge on the Pharaoh!) sent his adopted brother Odion to do his dirty work for him. Odion took Marik’s identity and was given a fake version of The Winged Dragon of Ra to use in his Deck as well as a counterfeit Millennium Rod.
During his Duel with Joey Wheeler, Odion draws The Winged Dragon of Ra but is too scared to use it because of the danger of Summoning such a powerful card. Marik convinces Odion to Summon it, but as soon as Odion attempts to attack with his copy of Ra, the real Winged Dragon within Marik’s Deck lashes out in anger at the use of the counterfeit card. It shows just how powerful it is by striking at both Joey and Odion, ending the Duel, forcing Odion into a bed to nurse his injuries, and forcing Marik to lose control over his true self, releasing his evil alter-ego once and for all.
Later on, during the real Marik Ishtar’s quarter-final match against Mai Valentine, Mai is able to use the effect of her Amazoness Chain Master to steal The Winged Dragon of Ra from Marik’s hand. With this clear advantage, she attempts to Summon Ra, only to discover that it appears in a useless Sphere Form if a Duelist without the right to wield its power tries to use it. This is a safeguard The Winged Dragon of Ra possesses in order to stop those without the right to control it from abusing its powers. In order to unlock the sphere you must recite a sacred text readable only by a select few, and only under the light of Ra! Marik is able to recite this text, which allows him to take control of Ra and win the duel easily.
The Winged Dragon of Ra, like the other Egyptian God Cards, required 3 monsters to be Tributed in order to Summon it to the field. IIt’s ATK and DEF were the total ATK and DEF of the monsters Tributed to Summon it. It’s most fearsome abilities, however, could only be used when it was Special Summoned from the Graveyard.
When Marik used Monster Reborn to revive Ra, he could pay all but 1 of his Life Points to increase Ra’s ATK to the amount paid or pay 1000 Life Points to completely eradicate an opposing monster. Yugi had a lot on his plate when he had to destroy it in the finals of Battle City. Using a combination of Obelisk the Tormentor, Slifer the Sky Dragon, and his trusted Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl, Yugi was able to destroy The Winged Dragon of Ra, as well as Marik’s evil alter-ego, putting a stop to him, as well as earning ownership of all three Egyptian God Cards.
It takes all this and absolute faith in the Heart of the Cards to stand a chance against The Winged Dragon of Ra!
