The Stereotype-Defying Strengths of People Who Love Living Alone (3)

A few days ago, an article was published in The Hill and republished over and over again in many places around the web. Titled “A record share of Americans is living alone,” the story quoted me several times, starting with this: ““Living alone can be a dream come true,” said Bella DePaulo, author of the forthcoming book “Single at Heart.”” One of the sites that republished the article altered that sentence a bit, adding that I was delusional for thinking that.

I thought that was pretty funny, but it also reminded me that some people cannot imagine that living alone can be a fulfilling experience. Or perhaps they feel threatened by the thought of other people loving a way of living so different from their own. Whatever the reason, I wanted to revisit some of what I and other researchers have learned about people who love living alone.

People who are single and living alone can feel contented, resilient, and fulfilled — even if they are at an age when many of their peers are coupled or married, even if they are living in a place where very few people live alone at any age, and even if they are living during a pandemic.
