Everyone needs a strategy to keep their data safe and secure. Since you're reading this article you probably use Apple devices. Your personal phone needs a backup and iCloud is a simple solution. For small businesses, with limited employees, iCloud backups provides an easy and cost-effective way to back up important business information.

The benefits of using iCloud backups include:

  • Cost - iCloud storage starts at free for 5GB of storage and scales up affordably from there, making it budget-friendly for small businesses. No additional hardware or software required.
  • Automatic backups - Once enabled, iCloud can do daily wireless backups of device settings, data, photos, etc. Backups happen seamlessly without user intervention.
  • Accessibility - Backed up data can be easily restored when setting up new devices or as needed. iCloud also keeps data synced across devices.
  • Scalable - As your business grows with increased users and devices, iCloud storage and services can scale with you.

However, there are some downsides to weigh as well when considering iCloud backups:

  • Limited control - You rely on Apple's infrastructure and have less control compared to an on-premises backup solution. Limited backup configuration options.
  • Security - While encrypted, proprietary backup format gives less visibility into stored data. Requires trusting Apple's security methods.
  • Reliability - Backups depend on having reliable Internet connectivity. Lack of redundancy for backup failures.

iCloud backups can be a great starting point for protecting critical mobile data. Follow these tips to get started:

  1. Create a business iCloud account using a business email address.
  2. Enable iCloud backups on critical devices - Turn on iCloud Backup in Settings app. Connect devices to power and WiFi for best results.
  3. Configure backup settings - Review which applications hold important information, exclude applications that don't hold important info ie. social media accounts.
  4. Manage storage usage - Optimize backups when needed by deleting old backups and removing unneeded apps/data.
  5. Test restores - on a new device. Make sure backups are working as expected.

While not a robust enterprise solution, iCloud backups can be easy and cost-effective data protection for early-stage businesses. As your business grows, you can reevaluate backup systems and consider solutions that offer increased control, security and recovery capabilities.
